Significant changes are underway in how Davao City manages its 753 tons of daily waste, and 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 (𝐖𝐓𝐄) 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐨 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐚.

📍 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 (𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧)
The current landfill is set to close by October 2026. To avoid disruption, a new 9-hectare engineered facility is being fast-tracked beside it.

👉 Purpose: Sustainably manage 700–800 tons of daily waste
👉 Focus: Proper containment, environmental compliance, long-term waste control

⚡️ 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 "𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚" 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫
Just recently, in mid-January 2026, a high-level delegation of Korean investors (including experts from ECOSCOREA and SMART E&A) met with city officials and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

They visited the site to propose a Biogas Facility at the old landfill.

📌The Tech: They want to capture methane gas from buried waste and turn it into renewable electricity.

📌 The Benefit: This turns a closed dump site into a productive power source while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions!

💰 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐘𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒?

It’s important to know that this project have different "bankrollers":

👉 Local City Funds (The Landfill): The Davao City Government is investing over PhP 559 Million for the new sanitary landfill. This is funded by our local city budget to ensure public services continue smoothly.

👉 Foreign Investment (The Biogas Project): This is a Private South Korean Investment. The firms involved are bringing their own capital and technology. They are currently conducting a feasibility study to see how much power our old trash can generate!

🔍 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐀:

𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐬 (𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧): Uses gas from buried waste (cleaning up the past). This is in partnership with 𝐊𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐀.

𝐖𝐓𝐄 (𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐨 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐚): Burns fresh waste (managing the future). This is in partnership with 𝐉𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐍.
