The current landfill is set to close by October 2026. To avoid disruption, a new 9-hectare engineered facility is being fast-tracked beside it.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Purpose: Sustainably manage 700โ€“800 tons of daily waste
๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus: Proper containment, environmental compliance, long-term waste control

Just recently, in mid-January 2026, a high-level delegation of Korean investors (including experts from ECOSCOREA and SMART E&A) met with city officials and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

They visited the site to propose a Biogas Facility at the old landfill.

๐Ÿ“ŒThe Tech: They want to capture methane gas from buried waste and turn it into renewable electricity.

๐Ÿ“Œ The Benefit: This turns a closed dump site into a productive power source while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions!

Itโ€™s important to know that this project have different "bankrollers":

๐Ÿ‘‰ Local City Funds (The Landfill): The Davao City Government is investing over PhP 559 Million for the new sanitary landfill. This is funded by our local city budget to ensure public services continue smoothly.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Foreign Investment (The Biogas Project): This is a Private South Korean Investment. The firms involved are bringing their own capital and technology. They are currently conducting a feasibility study to see how much power our old trash can generate!

๐–๐“๐„ (๐๐ข๐š๐จ ๐„๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ๐š): Burns fresh waste (managing the future). This is in partnership with ๐‰๐€๐๐€๐.

Davao City is definitely positioning itself as a leader in sustainable urban management! ๐ŸŒฟ

Be proud, Davaoeรฑos!

New Zealand aims to eradicate feral cats by 2050, the countryโ€™s conservation minister has announced, in plans that a decade ago generated a fierce backlash from environmentalists.

The conservation minister, Tama Potaka, announced the addition of feral cats to the world-leading Predator-Free 2050 strategy on Friday, the first time a predator has been added to the list since its inception in 2016.

Feral cats are already caught and killed in some areas, but predators on the list are subject to coordinated targeting, with large-scale eradication programs and research. More detailed plans will be released in March 2026.

Once fluttering gently through the coastal dunes of San Francisco, the Xerces Blue Butterfly now exists only in photographs and memories. It was the very first insect species in the United States known to go extinct directly due to human activity, marking a chilling turning point in our ecological history. The Xerces Blue (Glaucopsyche xerces) was a tiny, iridescent blue butterfly native to the sand dunes along the San Francisco Peninsula. For thousands of years, it thrived in a fragile, unique ecosystem. But in the 1940s, as the city of San Francisco rapidly expanded, its natural habitat was swallowed up by concrete, roads, and suburban housing. The coastal dunes that once held a rich array of native plants were leveled to make way for development, erasing not just a landscape but a lifeline. The larvae of the Xerces Blue depended heavily on two native plants, Lotus and Lupinus, for nourishment and reproduction. When those plants vanished under bulldozers, so did the butterfly's chances of survival. With no food source and no breeding grounds, the population plummeted to zero. Conservationists were too late to act, and by the mid-20th century, the Xerces Blue was officially declared extinct. What makes this extinction particularly tragic is how preventable it was. No diseases, predators, or natural disasters played a role. It was entirely due to human urbanisation and disregard for fragile ecosystems. And sadly, this wasnโ€™t the last of its kind. The Rocky Mountain Locust, the American Chestnut Moth, the British Large Copper, and several Hairstreak butterflies have since vanished under similar circumstances. Our modern world, in its rush to grow, has repeatedly failed to make space for the smallest among us. Fun Fact: The Xerces Blue Butterfly is so iconic that it inspired the name of the Xerces Society, a global nonprofit dedicated to invertebrate conservation. Follow Peter Dinolandia for more true stories of lost species, ancient worlds, and lessons we must not forget.

Last Thursday, the YES-O Club, in collaboration with SSLG Officers, began distributing bamboo trashcans across Salaysay National High School.

This initiative promotes an greener innovative to garbage management by incorporating sustainable and locally available materials such as bamboo.
Not only does this assist to minimize plastic consumption and promote environmental responsibility, but it also encourages students and faculty to be more attentive of proper waste disposal.
The project highlights the school's dedication to environmental care and promotes greener practices on campus. The YES-O Club and SSLG hope to promote awareness about sustainability while providing a tangible example of how natural resources may be handled responsibly. This is more than simply establishing garbage cans,it's about planting the seeds of tomorrow.

In Memoriam: Dr. Jane Goodall (1934โ€“2025)

With profound sadness, we mourn the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, who died at age 91 of natural causes while on a speaking tour in California. ๏ฟผ

Her life was an inspiration to us all.

โ€œWe are part of nature, not separate from it.โ€

Dr. Goodall revolutionized how we see chimpanzees โ€” showing they use tools, have individual personalities, and live in complex social relationships. ๏ฟผ

She founded the Jane Goodall Institute and the youth-led Roots & Shoots program, advocating for conservation, environmental stewardship, and compassionate action around the globe. ๏ฟผ

She leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, humility, and hope โ€” reminding us that small acts, by many people, can transform the world.

Let us honor her by continuing to care for our planet, protect wildlife, and empower future generations to lead with compassion.
