And this is why teaching the girls from is so important to us 🤍

Teaching the next generation is what will eventually make a difference in the future health of our coral reefs, specially in this area of the words where corals originated from 🫶🏼

Thank you for the donations to help there girls become Divemasters one day !! We and they are truly grateful for the opportunity.

If you study marine biology, marine conservation or literally anything ocean-related… this is your sign to get some hands-on field experience this summer 🌊🐠

You learn SO much more when you’re actually out there doing it instead of only studying it in class.

Things like reef monitoring, fish ID, survey dives, learning how research works in the field, working with other divers & researchers, how the computer programs work too… it just gives you a completely different perspective on the ocean and the industry.

It also helps so much with confidence, experience, meeting people in the field, and figuring out what part of marine science you actually enjoy most.

And honestly… spending your summer underwater with people who are just as passionate about the ocean as you are is a pretty cool experience, specially in a tropical place like the Philippines 🇵🇭💙

Not your average scuba dive day 🪸✨

One of the things you don’t really expect when you start working in ocean conservation and RA programs is how hands-on everything is.

From reef health monitoring to species management and small-scale interventions like this Drupella cull, every dive has a purpose here at IMR.

This time we were diving out of to help control the Drupella situation on their house reef.
Guess how many we got?? 141 little snail in one dive in the shallows 🙊

It’s not just about observing the ocean… it’s also about actively learning how to protect it, one dive at a time 🌊

Fun diving with the Reef Rangers 🐠🫱🏼‍🫲🏽🪸

The girls are getting their dive numbers up as they prepare to continue their education. More time in the water = more confidence and experience with every dives!

It’s so nice to see how comfortable they are getting but mostly how excited they get just with the idea of going diving, this is why we do it 🤍✨

Thank you to everyone who participated in making their dream come true, and who allow us to create the next generation of marine conservationists here in the Philippines ! 🇵🇭

We are so proud of them, and we hope you are too !

April 2026 - Raw glimpses of our month from the camera roll 🌅

If we could post 100 photos in one go… we would. So many beautiful memories made in one month while completing the Research Assistant course 🐠🪸🥰

They’re related, but they’re not the same thing. Think of it like layers.

Marine biology is all about ocean life, from fish and turtles, to corals and plankton. It’s understanding how they live, behave, and interact with each other.

Marine science is the bigger picture. It includes marine biology but also everything else in the ocean like currents, waves, chemistry, and even the seabed. Basically the whole ocean, living and non living.

Marine research is the action part. It’s the actual work like collecting data, studying species, and contributing to science. You can do research in marine biology, marine science, or very specific areas like coral restoration or sharks.

Simple way to see it :
Marine biology is studying ocean life 🐢Marine science is studying the whole ocean 🪸🐠Marine research is doing the work 💪🏼🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

Join us on our next Research Assistant course, get hands-on, and help make a difference for our oceans and our world ! 🌊

Throwback to Monday for in partnership with Project Pawikan 🐢

A really meaningful day spent learning more about the turtles we’re lucky to see so often here in Dauin and how we can help identifying them so we can better record the local population!

We found in total, over two dive sites, 28 green turtles and 2 hawksbill turtles ; here you can see a selection of our best shots but that’s only 15/30 !!!

If you’ve taken photos of turtles while diving in Dauin, you can actually contribute to their identification. Just join the Facebook group https://web.facebook.com/groups/projectpawikan and share your photos with the date and dive site.

The team can try to match the turtle with their records, and if it’s a new one, you might even get to name it 👀 (no luck for us this time)

It’s such a simple way to be part of something bigger and help protect these animals 🤍

Behind every reef, there’s a story 👀

We recently hosted Emilia, an independent researcher at IMR, working on her project:

“Effects of Structural Complexity and Coral Vitality on Reef Fish Diversity Following Corallivory.”

Her work explores how reef structure and coral health influence fish communities in Dauin.

👉 Want to conduct your own marine research?
Join IMR as an independent researcher and collect data for your postgraduate degree. More info on our website.
