𝗕𝗨𝗖𝗕𝗘𝗠 𝗦𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗠𝗮𝗚𝗔𝗗𝗬𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 💜🏆

The BUCBEM Students Alliance of Gender and Development (SAGE) proudly took part in the prestigious 2025 MaGADYon Awards held at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center last March 27, 2026 joining a community dedicated to fostering a more equitable future.

The event, centered on the empowering theme , opened with a series of transformative plenary talks that highlighted the significant roles women play in driving societal progress. Our delegation from BUCBEM SAGE witnessed firsthand the deep dives into three critical areas: Bridging Change in Bicol University, Bridging Change in Governance and Leadership in Albay presented by Hon. Cielo Krisel Burce Lagman, and Bridging Change in Regional/Countryside Developmentsled by Engr. Maria Teresa B. De Guzman. These discussions served as a powerful reminder of the impact of gender-responsive leadership in our academic and regional landscapes. BUCBEM SAGE officers took part in these discussions as active learners and advocates, gaining valuable insights into how these women’s stories of resilience and their current endeavors are creating tangible shifts in both local governance and regional growth.

The momentum continued with a comprehensive Audio-Visual Presentation of the 2025 Accomplishment Report, which showcased the collective triumphs of the GAD movement over the past year. This led to the highly anticipated Awarding Ceremony and Banquet, where the tireless efforts of various GAD champions were brought to the forefront. It was an honor for BUCBEM SAGE to be part of an event that recognizes the outstanding services of coordinators, teaching and non-teaching personnel, and student organizations alike.

This 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, the 𝗕𝗨𝗖𝗕𝗘𝗠 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 joins the nation in celebrating the courage, resilience, and leadership of Filipino women who continue to shape our history and future. 💜

Across generations, Filipinas have risen as pioneers and changemakers. From politics and governance to sports, medicine, and advocacy, their stories embody strength and nation-building. Leaders like 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼 restored democracy and proved that women can lead a nation with courage and integrity. Visionaries such as 𝗙𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼 revolutionized pediatric medicine in the Philippines. In sports, champions like 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝘇 lifted not only gold medals but the pride of the Filipino people. Meanwhile, leaders like 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗼 and 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀 continue to amplify the fight for women’s rights and inclusive governance.

For 2026, the sub-theme “𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀” calls us to remember the babaylans—pre-colonial Filipina leaders, healers, and community guides who once held respected positions of power in their communities. Their legacy reminds us that leadership has always been part of the Filipina identity.

Yet while we celebrate these achievements, challenges remain. 𝘼 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙮 𝙗𝙮 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝟴𝟯% 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣’𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮—a perception that reflects how deeply rooted gender expectations still are in society. While care work is valuable, limiting women to a single role can hinder opportunities for leadership, economic participation, and decision-making.

Guided by this year’s theme “𝗪𝗘 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆,” this month reminds us that WE stands for Women and Everyone. Achieving gender equality requires collective action—from communities, institutions, and individuals—to break barriers and ensure that every Filipina can lead, thrive, and shape the nation.

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝, 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙪𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮, 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬.

A series of event that opens conversations about the realities men navigate such as expectations, pressures, choices, and the evolving understanding of masculinity. Instead of placing men on a pedestal, this celebration recognizes the importance of allowing them room to speak, to reflect, and to be acknowledged not for perfection, but for authenticity. It’s a day shaped by listening with understanding the experiences that often go unspoken.

As HIMfluence unfolds, the movement leans into the heart of positive masculinity—one grounded in accountability, kindness, respect, and emotional truth. This is a reminder that building a healthier society means giving every individual, including men, the chance to redefine themselves beyond stereotypes.

May this event echo forward as a call to keep listening because when we hear each other out, we create a culture where growth is possible, healing is welcome, and humanity comes first.

Beneath the bold call to action of this year’s 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, the BUCBEM Students Alliance for Gender Equality stands together in shared purpose. With officers, members, and our adviser gathered before the university’s official campaign tarpaulin, we affirm our commitment to creating spaces where dignity is upheld, voices are heard, and every woman’s story is met with empathy and action.

This moment is a declaration that our community refuses to turn a blind eye to injustice. Guided by our mission to cultivate an inclusive, respectful, and socially aware student body, BUCBEM SAGE continues to champion gender equality through advocacies rooted in compassion. As Bicol University joins the nationwide movement, we echo the vision of a campus where safety is non-negotiable and empowerment is a shared responsibility.

Today, on November 25—𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙑𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘼𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣—we honor the memory of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists brutally murdered in 1960 by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. Their sacrifice sparked a global movement that continues to this day, yet the crisis has only intensified. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in three women, roughly 840 million globally, have experienced intimate partner or sexual violence during their lifetimes. More starkly, on average, one woman or girl is killed every 11 minutes by someone within their own family. These are mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends whose lives have been irrevocably changed or stolen. The violence encompasses psychological abuse, sexual harassment, human trafficking, and cyber-harassment that pe*****te the most intimate spaces of women's lives, leaving deep scars on their health, dignity, and futures.

The consequences ripple through entire societies. Violence against women is an economic one that threatens global development. Women experiencing abuse work fewer hours, are less productive, and are significantly less likely to pursue education, leadership roles, or entrepreneurship, diminishing workforce participation and economic growth. Research shows that intimate partner violence alone can cost an economy up to 2 percent of its GDP, with estimates suggesting that if sub-Saharan African nations alone reduced gender-based violence closer to the global average, they could achieve long-term GDP gains of around 30 percent. Yet despite these urgent realities, prevention efforts remain critically underfunded for only 0.2 percent of global aid is directed toward programs preventing violence against women.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Today and every day, we must demand that governments enforce comprehensive protections, strengthen support services across health and justice sectors, and challenge the harmful social norms that enable violence to persist. Violence against women is not inevitable; it is a choice we make to tolerate. We must choose differently. Stand up. Speak out. Demand accountability.

The world cannot heal while half its population lives in fear.

BU Joins the 18-Day Campaign to End VAWC

Bicol University personnel wore the color orange as they joined the national 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women during the flag-raising ceremonies held across all colleges and campuses on November 24, 2025.

The University stands in solidarity with the movement to promote respect, safety, and empowerment for all women.
