We know our anniversary was technically a few days ago but we just needed a quick breather to recover from a wild, action-packed week of events before finally sitting down to write this.

Some stories take decades before they're ready to be worn.

One of the most beautiful things we've witnessed today is seeing our older guests receive their very first traditional Batok tattoos from Melanie Maite Ambatang, apprentice and descendant of Apo Whang-Od. 🖤

And we're not done yet!

The session runs until tomorrow, August 5th, so if you've been thinking about getting your first Batok tattoo, this is your sign. Walk-ins are welcome (subject to artist availability).

To celebrate four incredible years, we're bringing back Melanie Maite Ambatang—a Buscalan tattoo artist, apprentice, and descendant of the legendary Apo Whang-Od—for a special 2-day Batok tattoo session at Localhost!

Registration Fee: ₱350
Tattoo Fee: Starts at ₱1,000 (final price depends on the size and design, to be discussed directly with the tattoo artist on the day of your session). Tattoo fees go directly to the artist.

𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠-𝐎𝐝'𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 "𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚 𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚" 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧

Heritage, tourism, and local coffee culture converged as the Department of Tourism Region IX (DOT-IX), in partnership with the City Government of Dapitan, successfully staged "Timpla ng Sining at Kultura" on July 23–24. The initiative added a unique cultural experience to the city's vibrant Kinabayo Festival 2026 celebration.

Held at Local Host Workspace & Café, the official venue partner and sponsor, the two-day showcase transformed the coffee shop into a dynamic hub of creativity. The event gave Dapitanons and tourists a rare opportunity to experience one of the Philippines' most treasured indigenous art forms firsthand.

The centerpiece was a live Batok (traditional tattooing) demonstration by Melanie Maite Ambatang, a bloodline apprentice and granddaughter of legendary Kalinga mambabatok and National Living Treasure Apo Whang-Od. Utilizing the ancient method of hand-tapped tattooing with a citrus thorn, charcoal ink, and a bamboo stick, Ambatang shared the centuries-old Kalinga practice with participants eager to receive authentic body art and learn the history behind each design.

The Timpla ng Sining at Kultura program by DOT-IX aims to honor Filipino creativity while empowering Tourism-Related Enterprises (TREs), particularly homegrown coffee shops, by transforming them into venues for cultural exchange. Through these efforts, local cafés become platforms where heritage and contemporary lifestyles intersect, enriching both regional tourism and community engagement.

The City Government of Dapitan welcomed the initiative as a valuable addition to the Kinabayo Festival, noting that it strengthens the festivity's identity beyond its religious roots by spotlighting Filipino arts and heritage.

City officials expressed their gratitude to DOT-IX for bringing the program to Dapitan, and to Local Host Workspace & Café for its hospitality and partnership. This collaboration among government, the private sector, and cultural advocates highlights how shared efforts can preserve living traditions while creating memorable experiences for the community.
