ICT-Based Flood Monitoring and Early Warning System in Danasan, Danao City
Flooding is one of the common problems in Danasan, Danao City, especially during heavy rains and typhoons. Many families experience damaged belongings, muddy surroundings, suspended classes, and sometimes evacuation. Based on what I have observed in our area, some residents are not informed early when the water level starts rising. Because of this, some people panic and are not fully prepared. As a senior high school student under the ICT strand, I believe that technology can help improve communication in our barangay. Through proper use of ICT, we can share information faster and help our community prepare before flooding becomes worse.
The purpose of this concept paper is to propose an ICT-based flood monitoring and early warning system in Danasan. This project follows the SMART method. It is Specific because it aims to create an official flood alert communication platform using Facebook, Messenger group chats, and SMS alerts. It is Measurable because the goal is for at least 80% of households in our barangay to receive flood updates and warnings. It is Achievable because we will use free and accessible platforms, and ICT students like us can help manage the system with the guidance of barangay officials. It is Relevant because flooding is a real and recurring problem in our area. It is Time-bound because the system can be prepared within three to six months and launched before the next rainy season.
Flooding in Danasan usually happens when there is continuous heavy rainfall and poor drainage. When the water rises quickly, many residents are caught unprepared. This project proposes creating an official Barangay Danasan Flood Alert page where verified updates will be posted. Messenger group chats and SMS alerts can also be used to send immediate warnings to residents. ICT tools like Google Forms can help collect reports from different puroks about the water level in their area.
The role of ICT in this project is very important. ICT helps spread information quickly and efficiently. Instead of waiting for word-of-mouth announcements, residents can receive real-time updates on their phones. ICT also helps organize data, monitor high-risk areas, and store important information for future planning. As ICT students, we can apply our skills in creating pages, managing data, and helping improve communication in our community.
This project will need the support of Barangay Danasan officials, the Danao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), school administrators, and ICT teachers. Youth volunteers and ICT students can help manage the online platforms and monitor updates. With cooperation and proper coordination, this project can help reduce damage, improve preparedness, and protect lives in our community.
