PRESS RELEASE | EcoWaste Coalition to Police: Drop the Charges against Greenpeace Activists, Silence Not the People’s Voice

---

The EcoWaste Coalition has condemned the arrest and detention of four Filipino activists from Greenpeace Southeast Asia on May 8 after peaceably calling on the ASEAN leaders to end plastic pollution and the region’s dependence on fossil fuels. The activists were subsequently released by the Lapu-Lapu City Police on May 9, but were charged for allegedly violating the Public Assembly Act of 1985.

“Unlike industrial polluters and corrupt politicians, the Greenpeace activists inflicted no harm to the planet, people, and wildlife with their peaceful, non-violent action. Instead of charging them, they should be honored for raising the people’s demand for real, not cosmetic, solutions to the waste and plastic problems affecting our nations and citizens,” said Aileen Lucero, National Coordinator, EcoWaste Coalition.

“We call on the police to acknowledge the efforts of the activists to protect Mother Earth and drop all charges without condition,” she emphasized.

Panatang Luntian condemns the arrest of Greenpeace Southeast Asia activists protesting during the 48th ASEAN Summit. The activists called on ASEAN leaders to address the worsening plastic crisis and dependence on fossil fuels, while holding polluting corporations and complicit officials accountable.

Environmental destruction is deeply rooted in systems of neglect perpetuated by both the Marcos Jr. Administration and greedy corporations. Elites working hand in hand with corrupt politicians continue to profit, while communities bear the brunt of the devastation; losing their livelihoods, homes, and even their families.

This is a blatant manifestation of impunity. While corporations continue to pollute and endanger communities through environmentally destructive projects such as large-scale mining, reclamation, and poorly managed landfills, those who resist and demand accountability are met with violence, harassment, and trumped-up charges.

How is it that corporations can freely plunder our natural resources, yet people fighting to protect them must seek permission or secure permits just to peacefully rally? Speaking out against environmental destruction and exposing its consequences is a fundamental right. The state must recognize that injustice exists beyond designated freedom parks and bureaucratic restrictions.

We call for the immediate release of the Greenpeace activists in Cebu and urge ASEAN leaders to uphold their mandate to address urgent issues such as the climate crisis. They must prioritize policies that protect people and the environment, rather than remaining passive in the face of private and corporate interests.
