Matthew 14:22โ€“33

This sunday, the gospel tells the story of Jesus walking on the waters of the Galilean sea. The discples were tasked to ride in a boat while Jesus went alone in the mountain to pray. Peter's faith is tested as he steps out of the boat and asks to join Jesus in the water while a storm was present. In his fear and doubt, Peter started sinking but was saved by Jesus as he reached out his hand and asked why Peter doubted. This story is a testament to God's direct presence in our lives and why we must remain faithful when faced with fear and doubt. Even through life's storms and raging waters, He is always with us. The story reminds us to trust in God's presence and to keep our eyes on Him, not on life's storms and hardships. Peter's fall shows that fear can distract us from our faith. Therefore, our faith grows when we take risks and stop hiding from our fears.

Matthew 13:44-52

This Sunday's gospel talks about how the kingdom of God is the most precious and valuable thing in life. As Jesus said, as a man finds a treasure hidden in a field, he hides it again and sells everything he owns to buy that field. And as a merchant finds a very rare pearl, he sells all of his belongings to buy it. These parables tell us that the kingdom of heaven is the greatest treasure one can possess.

Furthermore, the gospel reminds us about the final judgement as Jesus talks about the kingdom of God as a net thrown into the sea which collects all kinds of fish. The good are collected in the bucket, as the bad are thrown away. This symbolizes how God will one day separate the righteous from those who reject him. As such, we are reminded to live faithfully, acknowledging God's will.

Finally, Jesus says that a true follower and teacher of his word must acknowledge the old teachings, and the new ones that he taught during his time on Earth. This reminds us that a true follower of Christ acknowledges both old and new teachings as the whole of God's revelation to men, and his plan of salvation for humanity.

Matthew 13:1-23

"On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.
Such large crowds gathered around him
that he got into a boat and sat down,
and the whole crowd stood along the shore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying:
"A sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear..."

Today, the Gospel is all about the Parable of the Sower. During his time on Earth, Jesus mostly taught in parables and metaphors. Todays Gospel revealed that the purpose of this was to subject his people into further understanding his words. For them to open their hearts and minds in regards to what was being taught to them. The kingdom of God was essentially right in front of them, but it was only for those who are open to truth will they understand. In the parable, the seed represents the word of God and the soil represents the varying conditions of our heart. He teaches us that when we are faced with wordly temptations, trials, and lack of understanding, we must trust in his word and be open to the truth. Essentially, Jesus explains that those who have open hearts will understand, while those whose hearts are hardened will not.

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."

โ€œSimon son of John, do you love me more than these?โ€
โ€œYes, Lord,โ€ he said, โ€œyou know that I love you.โ€
Jesus said, โ€œ๐…๐ž๐ž๐ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐š๐ฆ๐›๐ฌ.โ€ Again Jesus said, โ€œSimon son of John, do you love me?โ€

Peter, who previously denied Jesus three times, is now confronted by the risen Lord. "Do you love me?" Jesus asked three times and each time, Peter affirmed his love for the Lord. In return, Jesus commands him to "feed my lambs," "take care of my sheep," and "feed my sheep."

Through this, Peter's three denials are counteracted by his threefold affirmation of Christ. Having publicly professed his love for Him, his role as a leader is now reaffirmed.

Peter is entrusted with the care of God's people. He is to lead them, nourish them just as Christ did with his disciples, and feed their souls spiritual food through the Gospel.

We are reminded by Christ, being the Good Sheperd, to also care for our flock, our own people, as we also share in the command given to Peter.
