Members of Agro-Eco Philippines have enough to eat despite the War in Iran

“Practicing agroecology – using own seeds, formulating own fertilizers, diversifying crops, and strengthening local food systems – is proven very effective and even promote resilience in a time like this” says Nonito Rebusora Olimpo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Agro-Eco Philippines.

Those farmers practicing conventional agriculture heavily felt the effects of the War in Iran, since synthetic fertilizers and the entire conventional food systems are heavily dependent on petroleum products.

"Building local food sovereignty is a long-term response to the increasing global crises. It helps communities remain stable despite external shocks and enables them to defend their right to a dignified livelihood” says Bembet Madrid, Coordinator of Fastenaktion in the Philippines.

Farmers in other countries where Fastenaktion is working also feel the same level of resilience.

The Local Inception Workshop in Cagayan de Oro facilitated by UNDP Philippines on January 21-22, 2026 through the -PH Green Economy Partnership – identified the establishment of large-scale processing facilities for organic waste (which accounts half of the city’s total waste) and plastics, passing of ordinances on Circular Economy and EPR, and behavioral change campaign – as top priorities.

These programs are featured in the Circular Economy Portfolio of Cagayan de Oro – to facilitate investments and supports from the European Union in the Philippines, UNDP Philippines, other development institutions, and even from government funds.

Cagayan de Oro is one of the 20 cities assisted by EU-PH Green Economy Partnership (EU-PH GEP), a 60-Millon Euro 5-Year Project funded (grant) by the European Union through its Global Gateway.

UNDP Philippines works with DILG and DENR in implementing Specific Objective 2 (Green LGUs) of EU-PH GEP by providing supports to LGUs through capacity enhancement, alignment of plans, development of enabling policies, building partnerships with CSOs and marginalized groups, and facilitating investments for Circular Economy.

EU-PH GEP is actively supporting to our country’s transition to a Green and Circular Economy, as it directly addresses the alarming problem of increasing plastic and food wastes.

🌱 Join us for an intimate discussion on trends in nature-based solutions in the Asia Pacific, and on the use of citizen science for flood monitoring. The forum shall serve as an opportunity for nature-based and urban sustainability researchers in Ateneo to share opportunities for collaboration.

💡 About the speaker
Dr Erich Wolff is a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University. His work critically reflects on the social, political, cultural, and ecological dimensions of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation. He is currently working on the governance of nature in cities including aspects of citizen participation, institutional frameworks, and monitoring and evaluation. He is an enthusiast of 'citizen science' as a tool to decentralise decision-making and engage non-scientists in knowledge production.

He obtained his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and Masters in Geotechnics from Universidade de Brasilia. He obtained his PhD from Monash University in Australia, and he did his postdoc at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His PhD work focused on alternative ways of understanding floods in data-poor contexts, such as Fiji and Indonesia, by combining community-based ways of making sense of water with conventional flood-modelling frameworks. He also served as a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and a lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne.

He is part of the 80 experts who developed the Global Roadmap for Urban Nature-based Solutions. The Asia and Oceania reports of the Roadmap will be launched in Manila this November.

🗣️ The talk is open to the Ateneo de Manila community.

Typhoon Tino and Typhoon have left a trail of destruction in the Philippines. Cebu for instance had P26.7-billion flood control projects but saw a death toll of 158 following Typhoon Tino. Negros Occidental meanwhile saw agricultural losses amounting to over P35 million.

The damages have not only reignited netizens' anger over anomalous flood control projects, they also reawakened discussions about the Sierra Madre's natural protection, as well as a new-found interest toward nature-based solutions.

But what are nature-based solutions, or NbS?

I’m so proud of Mangayon Farmers’ Association (MANOFA) – whose inspiring work on resilient agriculture is praised by DSWD. Congratulations!

MANOFA is base in Barangay Mangayon, Compostela, Davao De Oro. The members of MANOFA have bounced back better after they were hit Bagyong Pablo in December 2012. I had the honor of working with them from 2013-2021.
