Prophet Ezekiel was commanded by God to symbolically bear the punishment of Israel and Judah for 430 days. God told Ezekiel to lay on his left side for 390 days for the sin of Israel and 40 days on his right side for the sin of Judah.

Because Ezekiel was preaching to people who weren't listening. Ezekiel's actions were meant to visually communicate God's message to the people. Ezekiel wasn't just only telling people God's message, he was also acting it out.

People would see Ezekiel and ask him, "why are you doing that?". Which gave Ezekiel the opportunity to explain God's warning to people.
