𝙇𝘼𝘽𝙎 𝙆𝙊 '𝙏𝙊! With great pride, admiration, and honor, UP LABS once again celebrates 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐒. 𝐏𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚, 𝐚 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, recognized as an 𝑂𝑢𝑡𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝐵𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝐵𝑖𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑛𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑠.

Dr. Pamplona, an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños and Head of its Crop Biotechnology Division, is also one of the founders of the 𝐔𝐏 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (𝐔𝐏 𝐋𝐀𝐁𝐒). But beyond the academe and UP LABS, he embodies a deeper mission: 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙥 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙤, championing biotechnology not as a privilege for the few, but as a tool accessible to all.

Through his guidance and leadership, he continues to 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑒 𝑎𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑠, empowering them to excel in their respective fields. Dr. Pamplona does so 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙐𝙋 𝙇𝘼𝘽𝙎’ 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩: uplifting the nation's capability in science and technology through biotechnology, ensuring safety in its application through strong ethical practice, and advancing agricultural biotechnology as a promising solution to emerging challenges across various fields.

📚𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛 𝘁𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀: 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗶

BIOTECH researchers and staff, led by Director and Scientist Fides Marciana Z. Tambalo and Librarian Maria Lynette B. Aquino, donated science books, magazines, and fiction books yesterday, 7 May 2026, in support of the UP League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students' 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝘽𝙞𝙣𝙝𝙞, which aims to share and spark interest in agriculture and science as a viable career path, and nurture the youth’s passion for research and scientific development among young learners.

The donated reading materials will be turned over to Cumba-Quezon Integrated School in Lipa, Batangas, providing students with additional learning resources that can inspire curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for science and agriculture.

The initiative was facilitated through the BIOTECH Library (UPLB Biotech Library) and the Technology Transfer and Business Development Program, reflecting the Institute’s continuing commitment to knowledge sharing, education, and community engagement beyond the laboratory.

And maybe that’s how it works—ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴛ, ꜱᴛᴇᴀᴅʏ, but with an 𝚒𝐦𝚙𝐚𝚌𝐭. 💫

Like 𝒐𝒙𝒚𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒏, they didn’t just come together all at once; each began their 𝕚𝕟𝕕𝕚𝕧𝕚𝕕𝕦𝕒𝕝 𝕡𝕒𝕥𝕙𝕤—𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕥𝕠𝕘𝕖𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣 one by one, then slowly 𝚊𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚎𝚍 to 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, bringing fresh and genuine 𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴. 🧪

𝙈𝙪𝙡𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙨𝙖, 𝙏𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙤 𝙨𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙨𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙠𝙖 🧑‍🌾

Mula sa mumunting 𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘭 ng 𝙥𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖, sumisiklab ang kwento ng mga magsasaka sa 𝙇𝙞𝙥𝙖, 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙨. Pumarine at samahan ang UP League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students sa paglalakbay mula sa 𝙡𝙪𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙮𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣 ng pawis at tiyaga, at 𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙗𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙖 sa bawat hapag-kainan. 🍽️

Ang 𝙡𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙡 𝙣𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙠𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣 ng paminta sa bansa ay itinatayang 1,369 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙨, na kung saan 81.4% ng produksyon ay mula sa 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙨. Sa katunayan, ang 𝙇𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙨𝙤𝙙 𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙞𝙥𝙖 ang itatayang may 𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙖𝙨 na produksyon na may 338.67 na hektarya.
Gayunpaman, sa kabila ng mataas na produksiyon na ito, nahaharap pa rin ang mga magsasaka ng mga suliranin sa 𝙥𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚 at sakit na nakaaapekto sa kalidad at dami ng ani. 🐜🦗

Ang patuloy na 𝙥𝙖𝙜-𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 ng mga 𝙥𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚 tulad ng aphids, gayundin ang mga sakit na dulot ng fungi at bakterya, ay nagiging sanhi ng paghina ng mga tanim na paminta at pagbagsak ng ani. Bilang agapay ng organisasyon sa ilalim ng programang, " 𝙎𝙄𝙂𝙇𝘼𝙒 𝙉𝙜𝙖𝙮-𝙊𝙣: 𝙎𝙖 𝙇𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙢 𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖, 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙠𝙡𝙖𝙗 𝙋𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙨𝙖 𝙇𝙞𝙥𝙖," maasahan ang pagpapalawig ng impormasyon tungkol suliraning kinahaharap ng industriya ng paminta. 🏭🌱

Gaya ng paminta, sama-sama nating 𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙞𝙣 ang pamin-𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 suliranin tungo sa krisis sa pagkain, dahil ang 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘪𝘵 na butil ang siyang may 𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 init na kayang magpasiklab ng pagbabago. 🌶️🔥

Synthetic fertilizers have helped feed billions and are estimated to support roughly half of global food production, yet their inefficient use has disrupted ecosystems and intensified pollution. Advances such as genetically improved crops with higher nutrient use efficiency, biofertilizers that harness nitrogen-fixing microorganisms, and precision agriculture tools help reduce fertilizer waste while maintaining high yields. Improving nitrogen use efficiency is especially important because excess nitrogen contributes to water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil degradation. Biotechnology also supports climate resilience by developing crops that tolerate drought, salinity, and pests, reducing our reliance on chemical inputs. In addition, microbial innovations, such as the use of 𝑅ℎ𝑖𝑧𝑜𝑏𝑖𝑢𝑚 and other beneficial soil microbes, naturally enhance soil fertility and can contribute substantial nitrogen to crops, decreasing farmers’ need for synthetic fertilizers.

Agriculture plays a central role in shaping a sustainable future, and biotechnology strengthens this role by improving crop resilience, reducing chemical inputs, and supporting healthier soils. 𝔼𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕙 𝔻𝕒𝕪 emphasizes that 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵.
