We are deeply grieved by the assassination of Charlie Kirk today.

As your bishops, we want to take this moment to speak into the moment by reminding us all that violence of any kind is never the answer in situations like these. Public discourse engaged with both truth and grace must return to our collective consciousness as the only way to handle such issues. We are a people rooted in the love of God and the mercy and grace that are hallmarks of a life in Christ.

We are deeply grieved for Charlie’s widow, Erika Frantzve Kirk, and the deep sadness she and their children are experiencing in this unthinkable moment. We call our church to pray for them in their time of grief and intercede for them in the days to come.

Together, let us remind our nation that Jesus spoke these words in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” May we be a people of peace as we decry public violence in all its forms.

Lord Jesus, we mourn for our nation and for the family of Charlie Kirk. We are deeply troubled over the increase of violence in our land and ask that You would comfort Erika Kirk and their children in this time of deep sorrow. We call upon Your Holy Spirit to surround them with Your love and mercy and comfort them. Lord, You are a God of love and peace – we therefore seek peace as Your way in all situations. Help us to model Your peace always that the world may know You as our ultimate Peacemaker. Let us be a people who show our global family that it is Your Holy Way, not the ways of the world, that are our source of strength and holy power in this world.

Amen.

HAPPY 165th ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD FREE METHODISM

The Free Methodist Church was founded by Benjamin Titus Roberts, a priest, on August 23, 1860, in Pekin, Niagara County, New York. Rev. C. D. Brooks named the church Free Methodist.

The Free Methodist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination that originated in 1860 following a split from the Methodist Episcopal Church. It has a presence in over 100 countries, with a significant base in North America.

The church was founded by individuals who felt excluded from the Methodist Episcopal Church due to disagreements over certain beliefs and practices.

The first church services were held under an apple tree. The core doctrine of the FMC is holiness, and its theology is Wesleyan. As followers of John Wesley's methods in doctrine, usages, experience, and practice, the church adopted the name Methodist.

There are five reasons why it is called "Free Methodist": freedom from rented seats, freedom in the moving of the Holy Spirit in worship, freedom from secret societies, freedom from slavery, and freedom from materialism to help the poor.
