💙🩺 Today is International Harm Reduction Day, a reminder that pragmatic, evidence-based measures reduce preventable harms and save lives.
Harm reduction is a core pillar of health and social responses for people who use drugs. It aims to keep people alive and healthy, reduce drug-related harms, and support individuals in gaining greater control over their lives.
🔹 Outreach services help connect vulnerable people with healthcare, social support and treatment.
🔹 Housing First programmes provide stability, safety and improved health outcomes.
🔹 Drug consumption rooms offer safer environments and enable rapid emergency response.
🔹 Needle and syringe programmes contribute to the prevention of HIV, hepatitis C and other injecting-related infections.
🔹 Naloxone distribution can reverse opioid overdoses and saves lives.
🔹 Opioid agonist treatment is associated with reduced overdose risk and supports recovery and social reintegration.
🔹 Drug checking services help identify dangerous substances and contaminants.
🧩🤝 This is why harm reduction needs to be part of a wider, integrated public health response.
At the EUDA, we support EU Member States with evidence and resources to strengthen these responses.
