We are truly honored that the Consulate-General of Japan in Cebu shared our DAREDEMO HERO Family Day on their official page.

We sincerely thank Consul-General Yudai Ueno for joining us on August 1 and for sharing his warm and encouraging message with our children, families, volunteers, and partners.

His words on the importance of family ties, community support, and volunteerism deeply reflect the values that guide our work. We are grateful for the Consulate-General’s continued support and look forward to working together for the brighter future of children and communities in Cebu.

12 Years Together with the Community

Today, DAREDEMO HERO received a Certificate of Appreciation from Barangay Talamban in recognition of our years of service to the community.

For the past 12 years, we have been working alongside local communities through education, disaster response, emergency assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many other initiatives.

We could never have continued this journey on our own.

We are deeply grateful to all our supporters who have believed in our work and continued to stand with us over the years, as well as to the local government and community members who welcomed us, trusted us, and worked together with us.

This recognition belongs not only to DAREDEMO HERO, but to everyone who has been part of our journey.

We dedicate this Certificate of Appreciation to all those who have supported our work and to the people of the communities who have warmly welcomed us and allowed us to grow together with them.

Thank you for being part of these 12 years.

We will continue to listen, learn, and work hand in hand with the communities we serve.

“Why don’t they just get a job?”

For many people living in poverty, it is not that simple.

Some did not finish high school. Some cannot speak English. Many are caring for young children and cannot leave home for regular working hours. Even transportation costs can become a barrier to attending training or applying for a job.

This is why DAREDEMO HERO continues to provide hairstyling skills training in low-income communities.

With practical skills and basic tools, participants can begin working from home, at a time that fits around childcare and other responsibilities. Even earning 50 pesos from one haircut can help buy rice for the family, school supplies for a child, or medicine when someone becomes sick.

Some trainees are already able to provide haircuts in their communities. Yet many still do it for free.

When I asked why they did not charge, they answered:

“We know that our neighbors are also struggling. We don’t want to ask them for money.”

This is how people in poor communities survive—by helping one another. Perhaps the person who receives a free haircut today will help the trainee in another way when their family is in need.

Their kindness is deeply moving. At the same time, we want them to recognize the value of their skills, earn a fair income, and support their families with pride.

Recently, we brought the trainees to a local mid-range salon. A haircut there costs around 300 to 500 pesos—an amount they could never normally spend on themselves.

But when they watched the hairstylists work, they realized that the skills were not completely beyond their reach.

With more practice, they could imagine themselves working there one day.

It is very difficult to achieve a future that you cannot imagine. That is why we create opportunities for people to see, experience, and believe in new possibilities.

A pair of scissors will not solve poverty overnight.

But it can become a first step toward income, confidence, dignity, and a future built by their own hands.

We hope every trainee will develop a skill, take pride in their work, and become someone who can support both their family and their community.

[Who We Are]

We are part of DAREDEMO HERO, a non-profit organization working in Cebu, Philippines.

DAREDEMO HERO was founded with a strong mission:
to help break the cycle of poverty through education, community support, and opportunities for people to build their own future.

For many years, DAREDEMO HERO has supported children from underprivileged communities in Cebu, helping them continue their education, pursue their dreams, and grow into future leaders who can support their families and communities.

But poverty is not only an education issue.
It is also connected to livelihood, family income, food, agriculture, and the future of local communities.

That is why we are now working in Taptap, a mountain barangay in Cebu City, together with local small-scale farmers.

Through a JICA grassroots agriculture project, DAREDEMO HERO is working with farming families in Taptap to improve their livelihood through sustainable agriculture.

Our goal is not simply to give support.
Our goal is to learn together, grow together, and create a model where local farmers can earn better income with pride.

In Taptap, many farmers face difficult challenges: hard clay soil, high costs for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, unstable harvests, and limited access to better markets.

Through organic farming, soil improvement, agricultural training, and better market connections, we are working to create a new future for farmers and their families.

The vegetables we grow are not just products.

They are part of a bigger story —
a story of education, farming, dignity, community, and hope.

From the mountains of Taptap, Cebu,
we are growing vegetables, soil, and a better future together.

私たちは何者か

私たちは、フィリピン・セブで活動するNPO法人DAREDEMO HEROの一員です。

DAREDEMO HEROは、教育、地域支援、そして人々が自分たちの力で未来を切り拓くための機会づくりを通して、貧困の連鎖を断ち切ることを目指している団体です。

これまでDAREDEMO HEROは、セブの貧困地域の子どもたちに教育の機会を届け、夢を追いかけ、将来は家族や地域を支えるリーダーへと成長できるよう支援してきました。

しかし、貧困は教育だけの問題ではありません。
家族の収入、食べ物、仕事、農業、そして地域の未来とも深くつながっています。

だからこそ、私たちは今、セブ市山岳地域のバランガイTaptapで、地域の小規模農家さんたちと共に活動しています。

JICA草の根農業プロジェクトを通して、DAREDEMO HEROはTaptapの農家世帯と共に、持続可能な農業による暮らしの改善を目指しています。

私たちの目的は、ただ支援を与えることではありません。
共に学び、共に育ち、農家さんたちが誇りを持ってより良い収入を得られるモデルをつくることです。

Taptapの多くの農家は、硬い粘土質の土壌、高額な化学肥料や農薬、不安定な収穫、限られた販路といった課題を抱えています。

有機農業、土壌改良、農業研修、そして新しい販路づくりを通して、私たちは農家さんとその家族の新しい未来をつくろうとしています。

私たちが育てている野菜は、ただの商品ではありません。

それは、教育、農業、尊厳、地域、そして希望がつながった物語の一部です。

Through this film, young mothers who experienced early pregnancy share their own stories — their struggles, their regrets, their love for their children, and their hope that the next generation will have a different path.
Our goal is not only to raise awareness, but to transform pain into leadership.
The speakers in this project are no longer just “beneficiaries.”
They are educators, mentors, and role models who now stand in front of their communities to protect other young people from the same risks.
By watching and sharing this video, you become part of a movement that:
• Prevents teenage pregnancy through education
• Restores dignity and self-worth to young mothers
