Welcome to Southeast Asia ๐ŸŒ, where the beaches are pristine ๐Ÿ–, the food is delicious ๐Ÿฅญ, the people are warm ๐Ÿ‘ซโ€ฆ and the plastic pollution is brought to you by greedy billionaire corporations. ๐Ÿค‘

Our region should never be treated as a dumping ground for single-use plastics. ASEAN leaders must stop corporations from drowning our shared home in waste.

Cut plastic production. Hold polluters accountable. Protect Southeast Asia.

From Cebu to Rizal to Navotas, landfill tragedies are showing the human cost of a broken waste system. Communities are carrying the burden of plastic pollution, toxic emissions, unsafe disposal, and a crisis driven by plastic overproduction and fossil fuel dependence.

ASEAN leaders must not let this continue, not in the Philippines and not across Southeast Asia. Our SEAblings deserve a future where people are protected, polluters are held accountable, and solutions begin at the source: less plastic, less fossil fuel, and more support for just, people-centered solutions like reuse and refill.

We note the release of the peaceful protesters detained during the opening of the ASEAN Summit last May 8, 2026. Their release, however, does not erase the fact that they still face charges, nor the urgent message they carried: our leaders must act now on the worsening waste crisis, plastic pollution, and continued dependence on fossil fuels.

As Greenpeace Philippines โ€“ Cebu volunteers, we stand in solidarity with the activists who peacefully protested to remind ASEAN leaders that every person has the constitutional right to fight for a balanced and healthful ecology.

Peaceful protest is not a threat. Environmental destruction is. The real issue remains: communities across the region continue to suffer from climate impacts, waste pollution, and corporate-driven fossil fuel expansion.

We call for the charges against the peaceful activists to be dropped. ASEAN leaders must move beyond statements and take concrete action to reduce plastic production, phase out fossil fuels, and uphold environmental justice for present and future generations.

Across Southeast Asia, landfills and dumpsites are collapsing, burning, and poisoning communities.

These are not isolated tragedies. They are the cost of a broken system built on plastic overproduction, fossil fuel dependence, and corporate impunity.

When Greenpeace Southeast Asia activists peacefully called on ASEAN leaders to act, they faced charges.

The real culprits, however, are not peaceful activists or people demanding change. They are the billionaire corporations flooding our communities with single-use plastics and harming them with mounting waste, while people pay with their health, livelihoods, and lives.

End the plastic crisis. Hold polluters accountable. Drop the charges against our activists.

If speaking up for communities is treated as a crime, who is the law really protecting?

Four Greenpeace activists peacefully called for urgent action on the climate and plastic crises during the ASEAN Summit in Cebu. Now, they face criminal charges, while the corporations driving climate destruction and plastic pollution remain largely untouched.

Peaceful protest is not the threat. The real threat is the continued failure to protect communities from toxic pollution, climate disasters, and corporate harm. Greenpeace Southeast Asia calls on Philippine authorities to drop the charges and uphold the right to peaceful protest.

END THE PLASTIC CRISIS

โ€ผ๏ธBREAKINGโ€ผ๏ธ Greenpeace activists were taken to a police station after peacefully calling on ASEAN leaders to act on the plastic crisis and fossil fuel dependence.

On the opening day of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, Greenpeace activists held a peaceful protest urging ASEAN leaders to end the plastic and waste crisis, hold polluting corporations accountable, and move the region away from the fossil fuel dependence driving climate harm.

Instead of silencing peaceful protest, ASEAN leaders must listen to the message: communities across Southeast Asia are already being harmed by landfill collapses, toxic fires, polluted air, and plastic pollution they did not create.

The real danger is not peaceful activism. The real danger is a system that allows corporations to keep flooding our region with single-use plastics while communities pay the price with their health, livelihoods, and even their lives.

Greenpeace calls for the immediate release of all activists and urges ASEAN leaders to act instead on the plastic crisis at hand: reduce plastic production, phase out problematic single-use plastics, strengthen waste prevention policies, hold corporate polluters accountable, and support a just transition to reuse.

As of this writing, our activists are currently at the Lapu-Lapu Police Station 2 and have not been permitted to leave.
