Veiling 101: Why do Catholic women veil?

Many women feel drawn to veil but are not always sure why. If that is you, you are not alone.

Veiling is a beautiful and ancient tradition in the Church. It is a quiet way women respond to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Just as the tabernacle is veiled because it holds something sacred, women veil as a sign of reverence before Our Lord.

Throughout Scripture, holy things are veiled. The Ark of the Covenant was veiled. The tabernacle was veiled. Even Moses veiled his face after encountering God.

For many women today, veiling becomes a personal prayer. It helps create a sense of peace, modesty, and recollection at Mass. It is not required by the Church, but it is a meaningful devotion embraced by generations of Catholic women.

Veiling 101: What color veil should I wear?

Many women feel drawn to veil but are unsure how to choose a color.

Historically, some customs developed around veil colors. In many places, unmarried women often wore lighter veils and married women often wore darker ones. These traditions reflected dignity and vocation, but they were never universal rules in the Church.

Across countries and centuries, Catholic women veiled in many different ways. What remained constant was not the color. It was reverence before the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Today, some women choose veil colors that reflect the liturgical season. Purple during Lent. White during Easter. Green during Ordinary Time. Others choose Marian blue as a quiet devotion to Our Lady.

Some women simply choose a veil that helps them pray.

Tradition can guide us, but it does not bind us.
Veiling is not about choosing the perfect color. It is about responding to Our Lord.

He famously said, "It is easier for the world to exist without the sun than for a Christian to live without Mass".
