📣 Seafarers - your safety is our priority.

Behind every one of the 2,000+ requests we’ve received is a seafarer who is stranded and desperate for help. These seafarers have names, families and rights.

The Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf is a designated Warlike Operations Area (WOA). If you are a seafarer onboard a ship covered by an International Bargaining Forum (IBF) agreement heading towards the WOA, you have enhanced rights, including the right to refuse to sail into the area and the right to be repatriated at the company's cost.

🚨The ITF's position on Project Freedom: not one seafarer should be asked to transit the Strait without a full guarantee of safety. Seafarers see our full response 👇

"At the moment, there is little clarity on how Project Freedom will provide safe evacuation, nor assurance from Iran that transit will be guaranteed," said ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton. "Freedom of navigation must be restored in full accordance with international law, but it must be done in a way that is coordinated, transparent and puts seafarers' safety first."

"Until we have those assurances, we are calling on shipowners and flag states not to treat this announcement as a green light. These workers have already endured weeks of fear, uncertainty and hardship. They must not now be put in harm's way.

"The ITF is working with the ICS and the wider industry to determine how safety assurances can be verified, and we stand ready to work with all states to find a peaceful path that restores free and safe transit through the strait and alleviates the suffering for the 20,000 seafarers who are effectively being held hostage in the Persian Gulf through no fault of their own."

An Iranian official warned American forces will be attacked if they try to approach or enter the oil chokepoint, after President Donald Trump said the US military will begin guiding stranded ships through the strait today. Follow for live updates.

The recently concluded 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 brought together the region’s maritime stakeholders — and 𝐈𝐓𝐅 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮 stood front and center in the fight for fair seas.⁣
