20 TONS OF GOLD AND SILVER FROM THE PHILIPPINES IN 1942

In 1942, the Tambor-class submarine USS Trout (SS-202) likely transported the most valuable ballast ever carried by a submarine. Originally, its ballast was replaced with ammunition to resupply forces in the Philippines.

After delivering the ammunition, the submarine took on a new type of ballast—20 tons of gold and silver evacuated from Philippine banks. The USS Trout successfully delivered this treasure to Pearl Harbor three weeks later, managing to torpedo a Japanese freighter and patrol boat during its journey.

On April 8, 1945, the USS Trout was officially declared presumed lost, along with all 81 crew members.
