The Battle of Tres de Abril (Filipino: Labanan ng ikatatlo ng Abril, Cebuano: Sangka sa Ikatulo sa Abril, Spanish: Batalla del Tres de Abril) occurred in 3 April 1898, during the Philippine Revolution. It was fought in the city of Cebu, a month after the Revolt of Cebu began.

Battle
At 5 AM on 4 April, the rebels drove the Governor, General Montero, and his Spanish volunteers into Fort San Pedro and took control of Cebu City. When the gunboat Maria Cristina opened fire, the rebels retreated to the Chinese quarter of Lutao. On 7 April, 500 men of the 73rd Native Regiment and Spanish cazadores arrived under the command of General Tejeiro, and with the cruiser Don Juan de Austria, forcing the rebels to retreat to San Nicolas. The Spanish continued their pursuit of the rebels on 8 April into the mountain region.

Aftermath
Leon Kilat was killed by his aide-de-camp, Apolinario Alcuitas, on April 8, 1898. The rebels then withdrew out of the city few weeks after he died. However, some of his generals, like General Maxilom, managed to capture some towns in the province such as Toledo and Balamban.

There is a commemorative monument for Leon Kilat on Kilat Street in Cebu City for the 3-day capture of Cebu City.

Arsenio Cabreros is a prominent historical figure in Cebu, best known as one of the revolutionary leaders who fought against Spanish colonial rule during the Philippine Revolution of 1898.

In Cebuano history, he is honored as one of the "Six Generals" of the Cebuano resistance.

1. Role in the Revolution
Arsenio Cabreros was a key member of the Katipunan (K*K) in Cebu. He served as a Colonel (and is often referred to as a General in provincial honors) under the leadership of the legendary Leon Kilat (Pantaleon Villegas).

The Battle of Tres de Abril: During the historic uprising on April 3, 1898, Cabreros was assigned to help command the left wing of the Katipuneros alongside Eugenio Gines and Francisco Llamas.

Wounded in Action: He was one of the high-ranking officers wounded during the intense skirmishes at the intersection of what are now V. Rama Avenue and Tres de Abril Street. He suffered a wound to his thigh and was treated at the secret infirmary established in the house of Jacinto Pacaña in Labangon.

2. Symbolism in Cebu
If you look at the Official Seal of the Province of Cebu, you will see six yellow shells (specifically oysters or sigay). These shells are not just decorative; they represent the six primary leaders of the revolution in Cebu:

Arcadio Maxilom

Saturnino Echavez

Arsenio Cabreros

Leon Kilat (Pantaleon Villegas)

Francisco Jaca

Eugenio Gines

3. Legacy in Modern Cebu
Today, his name is preserved through local landmarks:

Cabreros Street: Located in the Basak-San Nicolas area of Cebu City, this street is named in his honor to commemorate his bravery during the 1898 revolution.

Historical Recognition: He is listed among the "Cebuano Heroes" at the Palm Grass Heritage Hotel and is frequently mentioned in local history books by authors like Dionisio Sy.

The Battle of Tres de Abril (April 3, 1898) is the most significant event in Cebu’s revolutionary history. It was the moment the Cebuano branch of the Katipunan, led by Leon Kilat, rose up against Spanish rule, successfully driving the Spanish forces into Fort San Pedro for three days.
The "Six Generals" of Cebu
In the Official Seal of the Province of Cebu, there are six white shells (oysters) that pay homage to the revolutionary leaders. While historical ranks varied (some were Colonels who were later called "Generals" by the people), these six are recognized as the primary architects of the Cebuano resistance:

General/Leader
Role & Legacy
Leon Kilat (Pantaleon Villegas)
The supreme commander sent from Manila. He was known for his "anting-anting" (amulets) and led the initial victory before his tragic assassination in Carcar.
Arcadio Maxilom
Took command after Leon Kilat’s death. He was the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans in Cebu.
Arsenio Cabreros
A key leader from Basak-San Nicolas. He commanded the left wing during the uprising and was famously wounded in the thigh during the fighting.
Saturnino Echavez
A prominent leader from Aloguinsan who provided strategic support and leadership during the later phases of the revolution.
Francisco Jaca
A brave commander from San Nicolas who was instrumental in organizing local forces against the Spanish "Cazadores."
Eugenio Gines
Nicknamed "Lindol" (Earthquake) for his ferocity. Like Cabreros, he was wounded at Tres de Abril while leading the charge.

Detailed Highlights of the Battle
• The Intersection of History: The main battle happened at the corner of what is now V. Rama Avenue and Tres de Abril Street. The Katipuneros, armed mostly with bolos and sharp stakes, faced the Spanish Guardia Civil who had Re*****on and Ma**er rifles.
• The Tactical Win: Knowing the Spanish rifles only held five rounds, the Katipuneros waited for the soldiers to fire their volley. While the Spanish were reloading, the Cebuanos rushed them in hand-to-hand combat, forcing the professional soldiers to retreat.
• The Infirmary at Labangon: After the initial clash, the wounded (including Arsenio Cabreros) were taken to the house of Jacinto Pacaña in Labangon, which served as a secret headquarters and hospital.
• Three Days of Freedom: For three days, the Katipuneros controlled Cebu City. It wasn't until the Spanish cruiser Don Juan de Austria arrived and began shelling the city that the revolutionaries were forced to retreat to the mountains.
