HERStory: Celebrating A Sister’s Journey

There are people who enter our lives for a reason. There are friends.
And then there are those rare individuals who become part of our journey — who leave an imprint on our hearts and help shape who we become.

For me, that person is Sis. Dr. Lorna G. Lumapat.

Today, I am deeply honored to share the HERStory of my Godmother in Alpha Phi Omega, my mentor, and my guide. She is more than a Sister in APO. She is family.

A Sister is both a mirror and a strength.
She sees you in moments of strength and in moments of doubt.
She understands you even in silence.
And she walks beside you — not to carry your burdens, but to remind you that you are never alone.

Through her, I learned what our letters truly mean.
Leadership. Friendship. Service.
They are not merely ideals we recite. They are commitments we live daily — to serve selflessly, to lead with compassion, and to love without condition.

She taught me that sisterhood is not measured by time or distance.
Sisterhood is measured in moments:
In “Kaya mo ‘yan.”
In quiet encouragement when faith falters.
In a hand extended when you are falling.
In celebrating your victories and comforting you in your losses.

Her strength does not seek recognition.
It inspires in silence.
It makes people feel safe, valued, and seen.
That is the true legacy of an APO Sister.

To my beloved Sister and Godmother:
Thank you for your unwavering guidance.
Thank you for your faith in me, especially during the times when I struggled to believe in myself.
Thank you for showing me that the greatest legacy we can leave is not what we possess, but the lives we touch.

You may not see all the seeds you have planted, but they continue to grow — in me, and in the Sisters you have inspired along the way.

As we celebrate 58 years of APO Philippines Sorority, I celebrate you.
Your HERStory is a testament to perseverance, sacrifice, love, and service.
You remind us that one Sister does not have to change the whole world.
Sometimes, she only needs to change one life.
And in doing so, she changes ours.

Sister Dolly and I have walked together since our college days. Over the years, she has become far more than a friend or a fellow member of Alpha Phi Omega — she has become family in every sense of the word.

"We are not sisters by blood, but sisters in the heart of Alpha Phi Omega"— and that bond has carried us through every season of life.

Through every high and low, she has been my constant reminder to stay calm, to have faith, and to trust that everything will fall into place. She is a woman of quiet strength: she rarely loses her temper, she lights up any room with her warm and radiant smile, and she supports everyone around her with a presence that is both peaceful and grounding.

She has taught me how to face life’s uncertainties with patience, grace, and unwavering resilience. In simple moments of quiet understanding, her kindness leaves an imprint that lasts.

Having Sister Dolly in my life has made me a better, more grounded person. I will forever treasure our deep bond, our shared memories, and the sacred sisterhood we share in Alpha Phi Omega.

Today, I celebrate a sister whose story is a beautiful testament to hard work, perseverance, determination, and faith in a better future.

During my pledgeeship, I had the opportunity to witness a part of her life that not everyone gets to see—the struggles, the challenges, and the times when life was not as comfortable as it is today. I saw how she and her husband worked hard, made sacrifices, and continuously did their best to build a better life for themselves and, most importantly, for their family.

She started from scratch and worked tirelessly to finish her studies. Today, she is a licensed Civil Engineer serving at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) while also working part-time online. Through her hard work and determination, she has built a life that she can truly be proud of—owning their house and lot and car, while providing a good education for their two children who study in a private school.

What inspires me most is that their story did not happen overnight. It was built through years of patience, sacrifice, and the willingness to keep moving forward despite difficulties. They chose to work hard not only for what they have today, but for a better tomorrow and a brighter future for their children.

She also reminds me so much of my own mother. Just like my mom, she is naturally gifted in dancing and sports, and somehow, whatever she does, she seems to excel at it. She is the kind of woman who can take on different roles and responsibilities and give her best in each one.

Perhaps that is what makes her a true Superwoman—not because her journey was always easy, but because she kept going even when it wasn't.

And behind this incredible woman is a husband who has witnessed her journey as closely as anyone and proudly calls her his “Superwoman.”

Her story reminds me that success is not measured only by the house we live in, the car we drive, or the achievements we earn. Sometimes, the greatest success is being able to look back and say:

“We started with very little, we struggled, we worked hard, and together, we built something better for our family.”

Her journey is a reminder that where we start does not define where we can go.

She is an Engineer.
She is a wife.
She is a mother.
She is a sister.
She is an achiever.
And she is, without a doubt, a Superwoman.

This is her story.
This is her journey.
This is her HERSTORY.

Sis. Ma. Cionception Rizon-Lagarto
Iota Sigma Chapter | Batch 2002B

Sis. Cion is truly one of the most wonderful and beautiful sorors in the Iota Sigma Chapter.

She is currently working as a Loan Officer of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Lapu-Lapu City. At the same time, she serves as a Financial Advisor for Prulife UK -helping families secure their future, just as APO teaches us to serve and safeguard the welfare of others.
She is also a member of the Philippine Air Force Reservist Class Matatag 2025 Alpha — embodying APO’s cardinal principle of Leadership, Friendship, and Service by answering the call to serve our country and community.

Beyond her grace, what shines brightest is her genuine heart and endless generosity toward resident members. As an active and dedicated alumna, she consistently steps up to offer both financial support and practical guidance, ensuring we never have to navigate our journey alone.

Her presence is a constant reminder of what it means to lead with love and purpose. Listening to her experiences and seeing her travels across the globe show us how vast the world is, inspiring us to dream bigger and aim higher in our own lives. She leads by example, proving that success is best shared by lifting others up along the way.

She was one of the organizers of the 1st Grand Sorority Ball in Cebu on July 17, 2022, held at Radisson Blu, Mabolo, Cebu City. With the simple intention to gather, socialize, and promote camaraderie among APO Sugbo sisters, the event has now grown and is celebrated nationwide.
We are so proud of you, Sis. Cion!

Having Sis. Cion as a mentor means everything to our chapter. She is more than just a supportive alumna; she is a role model, a pillar of strength, and an absolute inspiration to us all. We deeply respect her, look up to her, and feel truly grateful to have her guiding us forward. We hope to make her proud and follow in her footsteps one day.

Thank you so much for your endless generosity, your guidance, and for always looking out for us resident members. You are not just an amazing alumna who supports our chapter, but a true inspiration who motivates us to dream bigger and aim higher.

We are so lucky and grateful to have you as our mentor and role model. Wishing you all the best in your travels and future adventures. Always remember, you have a home and a family in the Iota Sigma Chapter!

HERStory: Celebrating A Sister's Journey

Sis. Luisita "Indhay" Jadulco
Alpha Omicron - APO Externos | Batch 1989A

Sis. Indhay shared that growing up was not easy. Coming from a family with limited resources, she learned hard work, perseverance, and determination early on. Despite the challenges, she stayed focused and never let hardships stop her from chasing her dreams.

Through discipline, she discovered her passion for sports — running and biking. Years of rigorous training taught her commitment, sacrifice, and self-discipline.

2019 changed everything.
She was preparing for her first triathlon when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the world. While races were canceled, Sis. Indhay did not stop. She trained at home, day after day. Not to beat others, but to become better than who she was yesterday.

When events finally resumed, she took on one of the longest Full Ironman with 3.8Km Swim, 180km Bike and 42Km Run
— 16 hours of endurance, strength, and will. Physically drained, mentally tested, and emotionally stretched, she crossed the finish line. She didn’t just earn a medal. She proved that determination can outlast any obstacle.

Did you know? Her husband Bro. Randy (Epsilon Mu) and sons Brod. Randy Jade (Alpha Mu) and Brod. Arckie Zeth (Alpha Mu) are also APO members — a true home of Leadership, Friendship, and Service.

Despite her demanding training schedule, she never misses a chance to serve. If there is an APO activity, she shows up first, then returns to training.
During the recent CVARlympics, she did not compete, but she came to support — cheering, encouraging, and lifting the spirit of organizers and athletes.
In every marathon and race as APO Runners/APO Triatlete, she proudly wears her APO jersey. To her, being an athlete and a servant leader are one and the same.

The biggest lesson she taught me
When I asked,
"What does success mean to you?”_ she answered with tears in her eyes:
"My greatest success is seeing my sons RJ, Arckie, and Louise become successful. The medals are just bonuses. My purpose is to stay healthy, live long, and be there for the people I love.”

From Sis. Indhay, I learned that success is not measured by trophies, but by discipline, humility, and service. It’s about showing up — for your family, for your community, and for the organization that raised you.

Sis. Indhay Jadulco is an athlete, a servant leader, and an inspiration.
HER story reminds us: with discipline, determination, and a heart for service — Anything is Possible.

HERStory: Celebrating A Sister's Journey

Sis. Lucia "Bebot" Mercado
Alpha Xi | Batch 1977B
Past Regional Director, CVAR

Alpha Xi takes great pride in honoring one of our very own, Sis.Lucia C. Mercado, fondly known to many as "Sis Bebot".

She completed the three phases of pledgeship in 1977 and became part of Batch 1977B, proudly bearing the batch name 'Golden Strappers". Since then, she has remained deeply involved in the fraternity and has grown to become one of the pillars not only of Alpha Xi Chapter, but also of the wider APO Sugbo community.

One interesting part of Sis Bebot’s APO story is that three of her siblings are also members of Alpha Phi Omega. In fact, it was her brother, Bro. Leo Mercado of Alpha Xi, who inspired her to join the chapter.

What makes her story even more remarkable is that she was studying at Southwestern University at the time and was not even a student of Velez College. Yet despite that, she found a home in Alpha Xi and has remained devoted to it for decades.

Sis Bebot is also one of the most generous people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Her kindness and willingness to give have personally inspired me to become more generous and to do better in serving others.

Whenever there is a service project, activity, or someone in need of support, Sis Bebot is almost always among the first to offer help. But her generosity goes far beyond material things. She gives her time, her presence, her energy, and most importantly, her heart. Her love for service is truly admirable.

Wherever she may be, when service calls, Sis Bebot answers. Whenever she is in the city, you can almost always expect to see her present in our activities, ready to lend a hand and share in the work.

To us, however, she is more than just a sister in the fraternity. She has become like an aunt — comforting, supportive, patient, kind, and always willing to listen and guide us whenever we need her.

Sis Bebot truly embodies what it means to be a sister of Alpha Phi Omega. She is always ready for service, a faithful fellow and friend, and above all, steadfast in leadership. Her decades of commitment, generosity, and love for APO continue to inspire generations of brothers and sisters.

Alpha Xi is truly blessed and proud to call Sister Lucia "Sis Bebot" Mercado one of our own.
