For some of us who feel invalidated because of physical, mental, or emotional challenges, we need to remember: Jesus not only brings hope, He is our Hope!
Jesus understands what labels and limitations can do to our lives, and He came to defy every sickness, every man-made opinion and judgment placed upon us.
In John 5:1–9, Jesus showed compassion to a man who had been invalid for 38 years by healing him even on the Sabbath—a day dedicated to rest, considered holy for the Jews. But Jesus only did what the Father was doing, for He cannot operate on His own—the truth that Jews did not fully understand from the scriptures.
John 5:19–21 (NIV)
“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.’”
But Jesus also reminded us in John 5:14, “Sin no more, or else something worse may happen to you.” It takes faith to believe in the impossible, but it takes wisdom to know the truth: returning to our old and sinful ways leads us away from God and ultimately toward everlasting condemnation. When we truly humble ourselves—declaring our complete surrender and submission to God—and turn away from our wicked ways, we open our hearts to His transforming work.
More than simply witnessing the third sign, we have learned that our faith is not placed in an uneducated, traveling preacher from an insignificant region of Galilee.
Our faith is in the Son of God, sent by the Father.
Jesus is our hope that comes from the Father, who sent Him into this world to accomplish His work of salvation, restoration, and redemption for all humanity.
Our Heavenly Father was—and still is—determined to dwell with us once again. He sent His one and only begotten Son to die on the cross, bridging the separation caused by sin and making a way for us to be reconciled with Him.
He has done His part.
Now, it is time for us to do ours—let us draw closer to Him through His Word!
