On World Humanitarian Day, we honor those who show up when communities need them most.

In the Philippines, we know this spirit as bayanihan. It carries us through floods, typhoons, earthquakes, and other crises. But our response to disaster cannot end with helping communities endure what could have been prevented.

Bayanihan helps us survive a crisis.
But bayanihan cannot be the answer to problems that demand accountability.

Beyond relief, we must build safer communities, stronger systems, and institutions that protect people before disaster strikes.

We grieve with the families, students, teachers, and the entire Ateneo de Zamboanga community.

In this difficult moment, may we choose compassion, respect the dignity and privacy of those affected, and give the community the space to mourn and heal.

Our schools must always be places where every young person can feel safe. 🤍

Angat Buhay is coordinating with the Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network to extend immediate assistance to communities most affected by flooding caused by the continuous heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

This International Youth Day, we celebrate young people as active partners in building stronger communities and a better society.

Across different realities, their aspirations remain deeply connected. They want lives of dignity, meaningful opportunities, and a real voice in the decisions that shape their present and future.

May we continue to make space for young people to question, participate, lead, and hold institutions to a higher standard. Their courage and participation make our communities stronger and our future more hopeful.
