In celebration of Cebu Press Freedom Week, the Carolinian Communication Society, in collaboration with the Society of Language Enthusiasts, presents a mini exhibit that revisits the truths of Martial Law and honors the stories that must never be forgotten.

Drop by the first floor of the Philip Engelen Building from September 24 to 30 and take a moment to learn, reflect, and remember.

In a world overflowing with information, the press carries the responsibility of looking beyond what is immediately visible—asking the questions that need to be asked and bringing stories closer to the people who deserve to know.

Cebu Press Freedom Week (CPFW) is an annual celebration that recognizes the vital role of the press in a democratic society. Its significance is deeply tied to the history of Martial Law in the Philippines. When Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law in 1972, journalism struggled to surface the truth of what was hidden behind the walls of facades and lies. Independent media outlets were forcibly closed, and journalists who challenged the government’s narrative faced oppression. The silencing of the press became part of a wider effort to control what Filipinos could see, hear, and know.

CPFW carries that history into the present. It honors journalism as a public responsibility—one that keeps the public informed, especially when the truth is difficult to hear. Remembering what happened during Martial Law gives press freedom a meaning beyond the newsroom: it is a freedom shaped by history and entrusted to future generations.

In Memoriam: Dr. Resil B. Mojares

We honor the life and enduring legacy of National Artist for Literature and the prolific Visayan Titan of Letters, Dr. Resil B. Mojares, a distinguished Cebuano fictionist, essayist, critic, historian, and scholar whose lifelong work gave voice to Cebuano literature and deepened our understanding of Philippine history and culture.

Through his writings, research, and mentorship, he became a steadfast pillar of Visayan historiography and Philippine letters. Among his many influential texts, his book “A Survey and Bio-Bibliography with Finding List (1975)” helped document and preserve the rich literary heritage of Cebuano writers, providing comprehensive historical overview of Cebuano printed literature.

Dr. Mojares devoted much of his work to cultivating, promoting, and preserving Cebuano literature. Through his extensive translation work, particularly in bringing Bisaya works into English, he opened Cebuano literature to readers beyond the Visayas and beyond the Philippines. In doing so, he uplifted the Cebuano language, affirmed its richness, and strengthened its rightful place within Philippine literature and culture.

As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life devoted to knowledge, literature, language, and culture. May his legacy live on through the stories he preserved, the voices he amplified, the language he championed, and the generations he inspired.

Rest in peace, Dr. Resil B. Mojares. Your words and work will forever remain part of Cebu’s literary heritage.

We see the world in 𝒫𝓊𝓇𝓅𝓁ℯ 🎶💜

Last August 28, 2026, 𝑺𝑶𝑳𝑬 kicked off with their yearly 𝓜𝓲𝓷𝓲 𝓛𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓢𝓸𝓬𝓲𝓪𝓵𝓼! A space wherein our new but energetic 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐬 brought out their inner language enthusiasts. 💭

From getting to know our student officers and members to diving into hilarious high-energy ice breakers. It was a day filled with 𝖈𝖔𝖓𝖓𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓, 𝖊𝖝𝖈𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖒𝖊𝖓𝖙, and 𝖕𝖆𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖔𝖓𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖎𝖓𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖙𝖘. 📑
