A journey of pain, hope, and shared discernment unfolded during the plenary talk of Fr. Daniel Franklin E. Pilario, CM, President of Adamson University, at the 2026 CEAP–CEPA and CeSSPA Teachers’ Congress titled “Synodality in Action: Teachers as Companions on the Journey of Hope.”
Fr. Pilario began with a reflective and creative imaging activity, inviting educators to pause and picture out both pain and hope, not as abstract ideas, but as lived realities in our classrooms, communities, and personal stories. From there, he led us into a rich theological reflection on hope as the “forgotten virtue,” drawing from Scripture through “hoping against hope” in the story of Abraham and Sarah, and situating hope within deeper theological discourse and concrete settings where hope can be practiced daily.
Central to his message was the call to embrace contemporary educational values that animate synodality today: Discernment, Dialogue, and Prophecy. These values, he stressed, must shape Catholic education as it responds to the signs of the times.
In the words of Pope Leo XVI, he challenged Catholic educators to reimagine their mission, reminding us that Catholic education must never be a nostalgic refuge, but rather: (1) a laboratory of discernment; (2) a space for pedagogical innovation; and (3) a place of prophetic witness.
The plenary ended on a deeply human and moving note, as Fr. Pilario shared a powerful story of hope rooted in gratitude, honoring his parents as his first two teachers, whose love and example shaped his vocation and faith.
A reminder to all educators: we teach not only lessons, but hope itself, by walking with others, listening deeply, and believing together that new paths are always possible.
