REEF CHECK!

Most of the coral reefs in Lapu-Lapu City were damaged due to typhoon Odette. We only have limited time to SAVE what remains. In cooperation with Seed4com - Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities, Saba Divers, The Ugly Grouper and yours truly Reef Rangers, we have started what we could to rehabilitate the reefs of Olango Island.

New research on reef recovery shows corals need nine to 12 years to recover following large disturbance events such as mass bleaching and storm damage. The findings are from Southern Cross University Ph. D. researcher Marine Gouezo, who works with the Palau International Coral Reef Center in the north Pacific. This will take years, therefore it is a long term project that needs collaboration among all sectors of the community. From planning, implementing and maintaining the projects, we can all help restore Cebu!

May this first few steps lead to saving our reefs and restoring the beauty of the underwater in Olango Island and all the other reefs in Mactan.

Coral reefs provide coastal protection for communities, habitat for fish, and millions of money in recreation and tourism, among other benefits.

The coral reefs were damaged with typhoon Odette's wrath. Saving and restoring coral reefs requires a multi-pronged approach that ranges from the local to the global level. We do what we can to save sanctuaries and bring back the healthy underwater life.

Thank you Kraikrai Jimenez of Shangrila Hotel Mactan Marine Biologist for the quick introduction and knowledge.

Growing of reefs is not overnight. Though, we, Reef Rangers hope that our extra hands helped to rebuild the beauty of the hotel's sanctuary.
