EXCITING NEWS!

DOT's new campaign, "It's More Fun For All," fuses its three (3) advocacy programs geared at women empowerment, PWDs, and the protection of children in tourism. To this end, this campaign aims at harboring support from local governments and tourism stakeholders to ensure that the industry is made more "inclusive, accessible, safe, and fun FOR ALL."

With the ardent support of partner agencies and stakeholders, ang turismo kay mahimo jud na para sa tanan, !

Discomfort rooms?

Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 provided specifications as to PWD-friendly comfort rooms. The current specs are as follows:
(1) Grab bar at the back of water closet not
(2) accessible to both hands
(3) The bar is only on 1 side
(4) Male-oriented
(T) No pull-up bar

We can see that since the current specifications are not accessible to everyone, universal design has to be applied. What does a toilet with universal design like?

(1) There are bars on both sides
(2) 1 L-bar on the wall for pullup
(3) 1 flip-up bar on the opposite side for balance

These are among the change proposed by HBN 05896 or the Bill on Universal Accessibility co-drafted by Adela A. Kono an Accessibility Advocate based in Cebu.

Kung ganahan ta nga mahimog ang mga comfort rooms, kailangan nato i-apply ang .

𝗪𝗲'𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂!

The 𝗣𝗪𝗗𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 policy advocacy project is geared at calling for support from the city's lawmakers to pass an ordinance for the enhancement of the accessibility of Cebu City's outdoor environments. Stressing the urgency for the city government to pose a solution to the problem of inaccessible outdoor environments which increase the vulnerabilities, further isolation, and poverty amongst PWDs due to mobility constraints.

Last week, we conducted a webinar entitled, "𝙋𝙒𝘿𝙚 𝙎𝙖 𝙏𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙣", and invited schools within Cebu who could echo the call for Universal Design and PWD empowerment. However, we're far from over. This project will continue to move forward by gauging public awareness of the rights and plights of persons with disabilities and calling for greater support from the local community.

Your responses will give the basis for drafting a manifesto that will be used to establish support and express solidarity from various sectors in Cebu City on the dire necessity of adopting Universal Design to improve the accessibility of the city's outdoor environments.

"Universal Design" is a term coined by American architect and polio survivor Ronald Mace to:

"describe the concept of designing all products and the built environment to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone regardless of their age, ability, or status in life."

Let us all learn how this can be a tool for human rights and PWD empowerment and what we can do as youth to promote it!

𝗣𝗪𝗗𝗲𝗗𝗶𝗮𝘆? 𝗣𝗪𝗗𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗮𝘆𝘂!

Myths, stereotypes, and stigma are barriers to the widespread realization of PWD human rights. Fear, prejudice, and misinformation are usually triggers to these common false perspectives. Here are some myths and corresponding statements to debunk them.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟮, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗪𝗗 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆?

Batas Pambansa Blg. 344, or An Act to Enhance the Mobility of Disabled Persons recognizes the "𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴.”

It specified some measurements for mobility but they are more male-centric in design and not responsive to the needs of PWD women and children. Despite the good intentions of the law, more has to be added in terms of universal accessibility, regardless of gender, age, or mobility.

For example, the concept of universal design could be incorporated in future PWD laws. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 is a term coined by American architect and polio survivor Ronald Mace to “describe the concept of designing all products and the built environment to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life.”
