This World Mental Health Day, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) stands in solidarity with those whose lives have been shaken by disaster, reminding everyone that caring for oneβs mental health is just as vital as healing physical wounds.
The theme, βAccess to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,β deeply resonates with our work on the ground. Every time a typhoon strikes, an earthquake hits, or a tragedy unfolds, our volunteers are there, not only to rescue, feed, and shelter, but also to listen, comfort, and bring hope.
This month alone, the PRC has been bringing psychological first aid and psychosocial support to individuals and families affected by Super Typhoon Nando, Typhoon Opong, and the Cebu earthquake. Behind every hand we hold and every story we hear lies a deep truth β that healing begins with being seen, being heard, and being cared for.
Each story our volunteers hear is a reminder of why we do what we do. Your courage gives meaning to our mission. Your pain, your resilience, your hope, these are what drive us to keep going.
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon said, βWhen people lose everything, what they need most is hope and someone to remind them that they are not alone. The Philippine Red Cross will always be there, not just with relief, but with care, compassion, and comfort.β
The PRC reaffirms its commitment to make mental health care accessible to all, especially to those enduring the unseen wounds of disaster. Because at the heart of every Red Cross response is not just aid β it is empathy, humanity, and healing.
