The conference gathered LGBTQIA+ student organizations and advocates from across the Philippines in a shared commitment to learning, collaboration, and community building.

Throughout the three-day conference, participants engaged in meaningful discussions on SOGIESC, Social and Behavior Change (SBC), Children's Rights, Gender Norms, and the continuous expansion of LGBTQIA+ discourse. These conversations strengthened our understanding of inclusive leadership, advocacy, and the importance of creating safe and empowering spaces for all.

Representing UEP Balangaw were our incoming Vice Chairperson for Internalโ€”Ms. Leawen Jarito, and outgoing Chairperson, Mx. Ivery Morales, who carried our organization's commitment to championing equality, diversity, and inclusion.

As we return to our campus, we want to bring with us the knowledge, stronger connections, and renewed passion to continue advocating for a more inclusive and affirming community.

What happens when you begin to realize that you are different from what society expects you to be?

In the third episode of the Balangaw Coming Out Series, we feature Kaycee Capales, the newly crowned Miss Gay University Tourism 2026, as she shares her journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and authenticity. Growing up, Kaycee recalled being called โ€œbaklaโ€ by the people around her. While those words made her realize that she was different, they also became part of her journey toward understanding and embracing who she truly is.

Kaycee also opens up about her experience as a trans woman, the acceptance she received from her family, and her reflections on love and identity. Most importantly, she reminds us that coming out is a deeply personal journey, one that should never be rushed, pressured, or forced.

Join us as we listen to another powerful story of courage, self-acceptance, and pride in this third episode of the Balangaw Coming Out Series.

Earlier today at 2:00 PM, UEP Balangaw, represented by its incoming Vice Chair for Internal, Leawen Jarito, held a meeting with the Gender and Development (GAD) Office staff to discuss the complaint formally filed by UEP Balangaw. Present during the meeting was UEP Balangaw Adviser Mr. Wilson Ejercito, while the organizationโ€™s Legal Adviser, Atty. Krista Retuya, joined the discussion virtually via online call.

During the meeting, Maโ€™am Blenah Perez, UEP GAD Focal Person, informed the participants that the complaint letter had already been endorsed by their office to the UEP Committee on Decorum and Investigation (CoDI), headed by Atty. Geraldine Giray. According to the latest update provided, the complaint has already reached the Office of the University President. However, there is still no confirmation regarding the commencement of the formal investigation despite the complaint having already been referred to the appropriate offices.

Beyond discussing updates on the status of the complaint, Atty. Krista Retuya emphasized the importance of initiating proactive measures and institutional reforms in response to the concerns and cases being received by the GAD Office. She also underscored the need for stronger mechanisms that would ensure a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for all students.

Furthermore, Atty. Retuya, together with the officers of UEP Balangaw, expressed their intention to hold a dialogue with both the GAD Office and the University President to further discuss the concerns raised in the complaint. The organization firmly believes that it is high time for the university to strengthen and institutionalize policies that protect students regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC).

Mr. Wilson Ejercito also expressed his support for initiatives that uphold inclusivity, student welfare, and accountability within the university, highlighting the importance of collaboration among university offices and stakeholders in addressing concerns affecting the student community.

A follow-up meeting is expected to be scheduled next week to discuss possible courses of action and future initiatives. UEP Balangaw remains steadfast in its commitment to keeping the student body informed of significant developments and advocating for timely, transparent, and appropriate action on matters affecting the welfare, dignity, and rights of students within the university community.

For Joey Marie Tibor, self-discovery began at an early age. As early as Grade 6, she realized that she was different because of the people she found herself attracted to. Rather than allowing societyโ€™s expectations to define her, she embraced a simple yet powerful mindsetโ€”dedma lang. With confidence and authenticity, Joey chose to live life on her own terms and pursue happiness without apology. Crowned as Catarman That's My Tomboy 2024, she continues to inspire others by proudly embracing who she is and showing that living life to the fullest is the greatest form of self-love.
