This Love Month, love should mean more than flowers, chocolates, and gifts. It can also mean caring for the world we live in. 💚
Fast fashion causes serious environmental damage because of overproduction and the growing problem of textile waste. One simple but powerful way to show love for the planet is by choosing recycling, upcycling, and preloved clothes.
Recycling old clothes gives them a second life instead of letting them end up in landfills. It helps reduce textile waste, conserve natural resources such as water and cotton, and lessen pollution from clothing production and disposal. With the help of new recycling technologies, clothes can now be reused more efficiently and become part of a circular fashion system where waste is minimized (Gao et al., 2023; Randhawa, 2025).
Upcycling takes this idea further by turning old garments into something new and creative, such as bags, accessories, or redesigned outfits. It prevents waste, encourages creativity, and reminds us that fashion does not always have to mean buying something brand new. However, many people are still unfamiliar with upcycling, and access to these services remains limited. This makes it even more important to promote and support this practice in our communities (Yuan et al., 2016; Chen & Choi, 2022; Randhawa, 2025).
Preloved or second-hand clothes also play an important role in reducing environmental impact. By extending the life of garments, they help lower the demand for new clothing production. Thrift shops, clothing swaps, and clothing libraries offer young people affordable and eco-friendly fashion choices. Studies show that people choose preloved clothes not only because they are cheaper, but also because they want to make more responsible and sustainable decisions (Islam et al., 2025; Centobelli et al., 2022).
At the same time, schools and communities are beginning to encourage recycling and upcycling projects, while policies promote reuse, repair, and recycling in the fashion industry. These efforts help young people develop sustainable habits and support a future where fashion is kinder to the environment (Alves et al., 2024; Aulia et al., 2023).
Recycling, upcycling, and choosing preloved clothes may seem like small actions, but together they create meaningful change. They reduce pollution, save resources, and challenge the culture of fast fashion.
