INT. DUNONG-KABATAAN AREA. DAY.

The usual worksheets are set aside. The blank page becomes a blank screen, and a different kind of lesson begins: What story do you want to tell?

Young people have an imagination that can stretch in directions we sometimes forget to look for. Their way of seeing the world can be wonderfully fresh, full of details and questions and possibilities that adults may have long stopped noticing. Give them a camera, and you begin to see what they see. What catches their attention. What makes them laugh. What they find important. What they want others to understand.

For our Ayta youth, having that space matters deeply. They are often bullied in school, talked over, or made to feel that their voices carry less weight. Last Sunday, they were given space where their ideas could take up the whole frame. They chose the story. They created the characters. They wrote the dialogue, planned the shots, directed the scenes, and decided the ending. They had the freedom to express themselves, their ideas, their values, and their own way of seeing the world.

CUT TO: YOU.

The film ends. The screen goes quiet.
So, what happens after?

Do we stay here, watching from a distance? Or do we carry their stories beyond the screen, into the places where their voices still go unheard? Do we simply know their stories, or do we let knowing ask something of us?

The next scene is up to us.

Will you keep watching from afar, or will you walk with them?

𝗔 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆, 𝗮 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱-𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼 🐰🐢🌿

Our Ayta Bulilits created their own story. In their story, the bunny and the turtle found themselves in a conflict, and when Apo Namalyari saw what happened, the children believed that Apo Namalyari would always stand with the one who was being oppressed.

The bunny was punished for his wrongdoing and, in the children's imagination, even became a carrot. 🥕 But when Apo Namalyari realized that the bunny had recognized his mistakes, he chose to forgive him.

It was a simple story created by children, but perhaps it tells us something much deeper about how they understand the world. In their story, injustice has consequences, the oppressed deserve to be protected, those who make mistakes must take responsibility, and justice can still be accompanied by compassion.

Most of all, their story reminds us that children are not simply empty vessels waiting for adults to fill with knowledge. They already carry their own understanding of the world, shaped by their community, their stories, their culture, and the things they have witnessed and experienced.

Our role is not simply to teach them what to think. It is to create spaces where they can tell us what they already know, how they see the world, and what kind of world they hope to live in.

CALL FOR CONTINUED SOLIDARITY

Since the rainy season started, things have become a little more challenging for the community due to increased pressures on their livelihood.

Thankfully, with your support, we were able to provide 135 Rice Packs for 135 families in our community. We know that material support eases only a few days, but know that this form of solidarity also reminds our Ayta brothers and sisters that they are not alone in facing this difficult season.

However, the current weather conditions has also caused illnesses to our community.

The Indigenous Peoples have long relied on their ancestral lands as their vast pharmacy. And so, the continued loss of land faced by the Indigenous Peoples also meant limiting access to their resources including their herbal medicine, thus making them shift to commercial medications to attend to their sickness.

With this, we are again kindly knocking on your kind hearts to help us gather medicines and medical supplies for our Ayta Nanays, Tatays, and Bulilits in our community.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝

There is courage in every letter they learn, every word they read, and every sentence they slowly write. Our Ayta Nanays and Tatays continue to practice reading and writing not simply to learn a new skill, but because they know that there are still too many spaces where decisions about their land, their homes, and their future are made without them.

Their learning is an act of courage. Together, they are building the confidence to read documents, understand decisions, write their thoughts, and speak for themselves. They are learning to put their fears, hopes, and dreams into their own words—not waiting for others to speak for them.

And beside them are boluntirs who remain faithful, not to speak on their behalf, but to walk with them as they learn. One letter, one word, one page at a time, our elders are reminding us that it is never too late to claim your voice—and that being heard begins with having the courage to speak for yourself.

Let us help create more spaces where Ayta voices are not simply represented, but genuinely heard. Stand with them, learn with them, and help make sure that when decisions about their land and future are made, they are not left outside the table—they are at the table.
