Bustos Dam irrigation water release possible by August
Ramon Efren R. Lazaro
CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan -- With the rainy season bringing occasional heavy rains associated with the southwest monsoon, it still fails to stop the receding water elevation of Angat Dam.
As these developed, the scheduled release of irrigation water to irrigated ricelands in Bulacan and parts of Pampanga earlier schedule this coming month of July may be moved back, Enrique Carlos, National Irrigation Administrator Bulacan manager confided to TUGON Balita
Carlos said that the possible wet season cropping season schedule for this year may be adjusted from July 15 to August 15 due to the low water elevation of Angat Dam.
Angat Dam supplies more than 90 percent of the potable water needs of Metro Manila residents, contributes hydro power energy to the Luzon Grid and irrigation water to around 25,000 hectares of irrigated ricelands in Bulacan and parts of Pampanga that is distributed through Bustos Dam.
Meanwhile, records from the provincial disaster risk reduction management office of Bulacan showed that as of 6:00 a.m. on June 9, the water elevation of Angat Dam was monitored at 169.88 meter.
This is just 9.88 meters above its critical level of 160 meter and is 10.12 meters below its minimum operating level of 180 meter or 42.12 meters below its normal high water level of 212 meter.
