โDavid asked, โIs there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathanโs sake?โ Now there was a servant of Saulโs household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, โAre you Ziba?โ...โAt your service,โ he replied. The king asked, โIs there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show Godโs kindness?โ Ziba answered the king, โThere is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.โ โWhere is he?โ the king asked. Ziba answered, โHe is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.โ So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel. When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, โMephibosheth!โ...โAt your service,โ he replied. โDonโt be afraid,โ David said to him, โfor I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.โ Mephibosheth bowed down and said, โWhat is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?โ Then the king summoned Ziba, Saulโs steward, and said to him, โI have given your masterโs grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your masterโs grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.โ (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.) Then Ziba said to the king, โYour servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.โ So Mephibosheth ate at Davidโs table like one of the kingโs sons. Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Zibaโs household were servants of Mephibosheth. And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the kingโs table; he was lame in both feet.
- Son of Jonathan, Grandson of Saul
- Member of the royal family, born into a palace, he had a family, he had a position, he had a future.
- He was surrounded by everything that a person could possibly desire. But suddenly, everything changed.
- And when the nurse who was taking care of Mephibosheth heard what had happened, she immediately took him and fled. Habang tumatakas sila, nahulog si Mephibosheth. At dahil doon, siya ay napilay.
- From that moment, his life was never the same. He went from the palace to a place called Lo-Debar, where we can picture a place of isolation, barrenness, and distance.
- He went from privilege to uncertainty, from security to fear, from the palace to hiding, and from royalty to a life of isolation.
- He lived with a question: โWhat will happen if the king finds me?โ
- Because the king that time was David. And David had a history with Saul. He had pursued David and considered David as his enemy.
The king was not looking for him to destroy him.
1. BECAUSE OF DISOBEDIENCE, MEPHIBOSHETH EXPERIENCED THE CONSEQUENCES
Mephibosheth was not the one who disobeyed God, his grandfather Saul did.
He lost his father. He lost his grandfather. He lost his position. He lost the security of the palace. And he became physically disabled while escaping.
Mga kapatid, this reminds us that our decisions can affect people beyond ourselves. Especially for fathers, mothers, and grandparents, we need to understand that the decisions we make today can influence the lives of our children and grandchildren.
Our children may see the consequences. Our grandchildren may carry some of the wounds. Our family may experience the results of decisions that we made. That is why obedience to God matters.
He was living in Lo-Debar, isolated and afraid. He was waiting for something to happen. But thank God, Lo-Debar was not the end of his story. Because one dayโ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฝ๐๐๐๐ฟ.
2. DAVID BECAME GODโS INSTRUMENT TO SHOW HIS KINDNESS
2 Samuel 9:1 David asked: โIs there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathanโs sake?โ Verse 3 says: โIs there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show Godโs kindness?โ David did not simply say โI want to be kind. โ Why?
Because David remembered his covenant with Jonathan in 1 Samuel 20:16โ17 โSo Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David... And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.โ
When Mephibosheth finally came before David, he bowed down. Imagine the fear in his heart. He did not know what the king was going to do. Maaring iniisip niya ang katapusan niya. But David said, โMephibosheth!โ And then: โDonโt be afraid.โ Two simple words: ๐๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐๐. And David told him:

And ultimately,

3. GODโS KINDNESS RESTORED WHAT WAS LOST
David continued: โI will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.โ David was not simply giving Mephibosheth temporary assistance. He was restoring what had been lost. The land was restored, his provision and position was restored. And he was given access to the king's table.
In verse 13, his physical condition had not changed. But his position had changed.
Sometimes we think restoration means that God will immediately remove every problem from our lives. But sometimes God's restoration is not first about changing our circumstances. The king's kindness was greater than his condition.
4. THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, WE ARE BROUGHT FROM LO-DEBAR TO THE KINGโS TABLE
Before we came to Christ, our spiritual condition was like Lo-Debar, dry, empty, separated, and without spiritual life. We may be healthy physically but spiritually empty. Because the greatest problem of humanity is not merely physical. It is spiritual.
And just like Mephibosheth, we could not restore ourselves. We could not simply walk back to the palace. We could not earn our way into the presence of the King.
Our salvation does not begin with what we can do for God. It begins with what God has done for us. And this is where Jesus Christ comes in.
David showed kindness to Mephibosheth.
David restored Mephibosheth's land.
David gave Mephibosheth a place at his table.
David remembered his covenant with Jonathan.
David said: โDon't be afraid.โ And because of Christ, we can approach God - not because we are worthy by ourselves, John 3:16 says โFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.โ And through Him, we can be reconciled to God. That is why Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 โTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!โ
Mephibosheth did not earn his seat at David's table. It was given to him because of the covenant. And our salvation is not something we earn by our own works.
Psalm 23:5 โYou prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
5. BECAUSE WE HAVE RECEIVED GODโS KINDNESS, WE MUST SHOW KINDNESS
If we have received kindness from God, we should become people who show kindness. David did not keep God's kindness to himself. God used David to extend kindness to Mephibosheth.
God can use us in the same way. There are people around us who may be living in their own Lo-Debar. People who feel forgotten, rejected, wounded, discouraged, lost hope. People who need someone to remind them: โDonโt be afraidโ. Perhaps God is reminding us today: โYOU HAVE RECEIVED MY KINDNESS. NOW SHOW KINDNESS.โ CONCLUSION: FROM LO-DEBAR TO THE KINGโS TABLE
Mephibosheth started in the palace โ tragedy โ became lame โ lived in Lo Debar โ lived with fear and isolation โ thought his story was finished. But one day, the king remembered.
THE FORGOTTEN ARE ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฝ๐๐๐๐ฟ. โ THE BROKEN EXPERIENCE RESTORATION.
FINAL CHALLENGE
LET US BE CAREFUL WITH OUR OBEDIENCE FOR OUR CHOICES TODAY CAN AFFECT THE NEXT GENERATION.
Let us remember that God's kindness can reach us even in our Lo-Debar. Wherever you are today, GOD KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE.
Let us receive and reflect God's kindness. WE HAVE RECEIVED GOD'S KINDNESS SO THAT GOD'S KINDNESS CAN FLOW THROUGH US.
