August 21 is World Mosquito Dayโ a time to raise awareness about the worldโs deadliest creature! Mosquitoes (Family: Culicidae) (NCBI, n.d., & ITIS, n.d.) play complex roles in our ecosystems, as pollinators and nutrient recyclers (Herreros-Moya, et al. & Kumawat, et al.). However, as vector organisms (a living organisms that transfers infectious diseases), female mosquitoes are also transmitters of serious diseases like Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and Malaria. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024 & WHO, 2020).
With the rainy/typhoon season in full swing across the country, stagnant water quickly accumulates in open containers, gutters, and plant pots creating an ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and triggering seasonal surges in Dengue cases. Protecting our households starts right at our doorsteps! (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024 & WHO, 2020).
How you can protect yourself and your family:
โ๐ซ Eliminate breeding sites: Regularly check, empty, and clean open water containers, and clogged gutters around your home.
โ๐ฟ Shield up: Apply insect repellent and wear loose, long-sleeved clothing during peak mosquito activity hours.
โ๐ Clean your surroundings: Keep your yard clear of discarded trash and debris that can trap rainwater.
โ๐ Stay informed: Check local health center guidelines for methods used to limit organisms like mosquitoes, and available preventive vaccines.
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024 & WHO, 2020).
โLetโs keep our communities clean, dry, safe and mosquito-free this rainy season! ๐ง๏ธโจ
