Did you Know?

The ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง (=), a symbol now universally used in mathematics, was not always part of mathematical notation. Before its invention, mathematicians would write out phrases such as โ€œis equal toโ€ repeatedly in their work. This made equations longer and more time-consuming to write and interpret.

In 1557, a Welsh mathematician named ๐‘๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ญ ๐‘๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ž introduced the equals sign in his book ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ช๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ. He chose two parallel horizontal lines to represent equality, explaining that no two things could be more equal than parallel lines that never meet or diverge. This simple yet effective symbol allowed for

Over time, the equals sign became widely accepted and is now an essential part of mathematical language. It is used to show that two expressions have the same value, forming the basis of equations and problem-solving across all areas of mathematics. The invention of this symbol ๐™จ๐™ž๐™œ๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™›๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ซ๐™š๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™š๐™›๐™›๐™ž๐™˜๐™ž๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ก ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ข๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ and remains one of the most important notational developments in the field.

In 2025, Tom Murphy VII, an independent computer science scholar, introduced the term "nopert" to denote a particular convex polyhedron with 90 vertices, 240 edges, and 152 faces. The noperthedron, a shape with a distinctive trait, is incapable of passing through a cavity that has been drilled into an identical copy of itself.

Despite the fact that it is not the first shape to be identified as potentially Nopert, it is the first to have been definitively proved to be so. In a recent paper, Mathematicians Sergey Yurkevich from A&R Tech and Jakob Steininger from Statistics Austria introduced the noperthedron, emphasizing its meticulously designed properties that facilitate the demonstration of its unique feature.

Did you know that March 14 is Pi Day?

Today, March 14 or 3.14, famous constant we know from elementary school, ฯ€ (pi). This date was chosen because 3.14 represents the first three significant digits of ฯ€. We also honor the contributions of Archimedes, who produced one of the earliest and most accurate approximations of ฯ€ in ancient mathematics. Through his method of using polygons to approximate circles, he demonstrated that the area of a circle is tied to a constant ratio related to its radius.

Because of this remarkable work, ฯ€ is sometimes referred to as โ€œArchimedesโ€™ constant.โ€ Today, we celebrate not only the number itself but also the centuries of mathematical discovery it represents.

Today, we celebrate the power of mathematics in shaping our minds and understanding the world. Honoring the legacy of Renรฉ Descartes, also known as the Father of Modern Mathematics and analytic geometry, whose work transformed and revolutionized modern mathematics, setting the solid groundwork for all existing equations today, which helped solve many mysteries of the world. He is also known for introducing the Cartesian Coordinate System and the Unification of Algebra and Geometry, which we still use today.

As mathematics continues to shape the world and serve as the foundation for reasoning, logic, and discovery, we take this day to celebrate its significance and honor its influence in our lives. May we learn to see mathematics not merely as numbers and formulas, but as a powerful language that helps us understand patterns, solve problems, and explain the universe on a deeper level. Let it inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and perseverance in every challenge we face. May mathematics bring you both joy and hope as you work through the problems of today and the possibilities of your future.

In celebration of ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ปโ€™๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต, SMART Club honors women in the field of mathematics who have made significant contributions to the body of knowledge, but sadly, their stories are quietly removed from the narrative. This womenโ€™s month, we highlight brilliant women in history as a tribute to their courage and brilliance. A celebration of their remarkable minds that have shaped and inspired future generations.

For all of the women who helped shape the world through their creative and critical thinking skills by conceptualizing theories, formulating equations, doing the impossible, and most importantly, doing what men can do. This month, SMART Club gives the proper recognition to these women who helped change the whole world. SMART Club not only gives praise to these Women, but to all women of the world. โ€œBabae ka, at hindi Babae ka lang.โ€ You may be the next woman who will be recognized as a contributor in the field of mathematics and in the field of many other fields.

Here is a list of Women with their incredible discoveries that helped set the foundation for the bigger, brighter, and bolder future.
