On September 21, 2025, we remember one of the darkest chapters in Philippine historyโthe day in 1972 when the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081, declaring Martial Law. Exactly fifty-three years ago, martial law was presented as a safeguard for the Filipino people against escalating chaos; however, it became the very reason the nation descended into fear and repression, leaving scars that remind us to continually resist tyranny.
We honor the memory of those who endured unlawful detention, censorship, torture, and loss of life during this period. Let it not be forgotten that under Marcos Sr., significant public resources were channeled toward personal luxury, leaving millions of Filipinos in poverty while the nationโs debt escalated. Despite having the opportunity as President of the Republic to address and rectify the injustices committed during his fatherโs regime, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.โrepeatedly accused of attempting to whitewash the dictatorship by emphasizing economic growth while downplaying documented human-rights abusesโhas chosen not to confront or meaningfully redress these historical wrongs.
And now, as we face yet another crisis in flood-control projects stained by corruption, the pain of history echoes in the present. Reports state that since 2022, โฑ545 billion intended for flood-control efforts has been plagued by irregularities: projects left unfinished, โghostโ projects existing only on paper, overpriced infrastructure, and a group of contractors receiving disproportionately large shares of the contracts.
These modern abuses mirror those of the pastโhuge debts, inflated costs, diversion of public funds, and the suffering of ordinary citizens. The recurring flooding, loss of life, destruction of homes, and millions of pesos wasted each year are not merely policy failures; they are reflect a legacy of corruption deeply ingrained in governance.
Silence is not an option. We call for the Marcos administration and all corrupt public officials to be held fully accountable for the offenses they have shamelessly inflicted upon our country. As scholars of the nation, we acknowledge that the education we receive and the opportunities entrusted to us come from the people and must ultimately serve the people, as both are a privilege and a responsibility. The Letran Calamba DOST Scholarsโ Society stands in solidarity with the people and reaffirms our shared commitment to safeguarding truth, justice, and the freedoms that countless Filipinos bravely defended.
