𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦| 𝗢𝗻-𝗧𝗵𝗲-𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗣-𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀

The six students from the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries successfully wrapped up their first week of On-the-Job Training at 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 – 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗙𝗢𝗦)

Their first day consisted of an orientation program covering their deployment on different Institute under CFOS—the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 (𝗜𝗔), 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 (𝗜𝗙𝗣𝗧), 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 (𝗜𝗠𝗙𝗢), and 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗜𝗙𝗣𝗗𝗦). During their first week of deployment at the Institute of Aquaculture (IA), two students chose the Aquaculture Laboratory Techniques section as their assigned area, while the remaining four students chose the Seaweed Laboratory as it aligned with their interests.

In the Aquaculture Laboratory Basic Techniques section, the interns learned the proper order of wearing personal protective Equipment (PPE), dilution, observation of different tissue samples under the microscope, tissue cutting using a microtome, blood extraction from eel samples, and DNA extraction from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒏𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂. They were also given the opportunity to observe and assist undergraduate students from UPV-CFOS-IA in conducting microbiology-related research projects.

While in seaweed laboratory area, as part of a five-intern team, they are engaged in rigorous hands-on exercises, including transferring seaweeds during water changes, running water aeration systems, and preparing glassware such as test tubes and petri dishes. Additionally, the interns are utilizing photometers to measure light intensity and absorbance for optimal cultivation, while handling dissecting and compound microscopes to identify seaweed cell conditions and isolate germlings for the ongoing growth of leafy green marine algae.

These activities allow the interns to gain valuable hands-on laboratory experience and practical knowledge in fisheries research.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 | 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 🎣🌊

Earlier today, May 8, 2026, the 2nd Year BS Fisheries (BSFi) students conducted a field-based learning activity in Manguiring, Calabanga, Camarines Sur on Capture Fisheries.

The activity provided students with hands-on learning experiences on fishing boat familiarization, fishing gear identification, and fishing operations. Through this activity, the students were able to gain practical knowledge and deepen their understanding of capture fisheries and its importance in the fisheries sector.

The field-based learning activity was facilitated by BSFi faculty members Ms. Cherry M. Montalban and Mr. Caryl A. Dioneda, who guided the students throughout the educational experience.

Such activities continue to strengthen experiential learning and equip students with essential skills and knowledge needed in the field of fisheries.

‘SAVE SAN MIGUEL BAY’

Inihanda kahapon ng mga mangingisda sa Calabanga, Camarines Sur ang mga panawagang bibitbitin para sa gagawing aktibidad sa hapon ng April 22, 2026 bilang pagtutol sa planong San Miguel Bay Offshore Wind Project. Bahagi rin ito ng paggunita ng Earth Day ngayong araw.

Lubos na ikinababahala ng maliliit na mangingisda at fish traders ang pagkawasak ng kabuhayan nila kung matuloy ang proyekto na pinondohan ng Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) sa halagang $3 bilyon. Ayon pa sa provincial government ng Camarines Sur, nasa 23,307 ektarya ang sasakupin ng proyektong ito.

Iba’t ibang barangay sa Calabanga at karatig na mga munisipyo ang inaasahang dadalo sa aktibidad mamaya mula Sabang Fish Port tungo sa People’s Park sa sentro ng Calabanga. Panawagan nilang itigil ang proyekto upang hindi mawasak ang inaasahan nilang yamang dagat ng San Miguel Bay, lalo na sa panahon ng kaliwa’t kanang krisis na nagaganap sa Pilipinas. | via Baretang Bikolnon

Today, April 9, 2026, marking the 84th Anniversary of the Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan), the Philippines increasingly honors fisherfolk as modern-day heroes who embody the same "kagitingan" (valor) as the defenders of Bataan.

This Day of Valor, we honor not just the heroes of our past, but the "Frontliners of our Seas" who show incredible bravery every single day.
While we commemorate the courage of Bataan, we also recognize the struggle of our fisherfolk facing a battle today decline of catch and Fuel Crisis. ⛽️📉

Despite the soaring costs of fuel that eat away at their daily catch, our fishers continue to head out to sea to ensure food is on our tables. Their resilience in the face of economic hardship is a modern act of heroism.
