Every August, we observe International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Month to raise awareness of the rules that seek to protect human dignity, civilians, and others affected by armed conflict, and to limit the effects of conflict.

This year's theme, "𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘢 𝘜𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘬𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘴𝘢 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘨 𝘐𝘏𝘓" highlights the importance of cooperation and collective efforts in promoting respect for IHL.

IHL is a set of rules that applies during armed conflict. It seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict by protecting persons who are not, or are no longer, taking part in hostilities.

Through its Volunteers, Logistics, and Information Technology, the Philippine Red Cross continues to support awareness and understanding of IHL, promote respect for the emblems of humanity, and provide neutral and impartial humanitarian assistance to people affected by emergencies and armed conflict.

The Philippine Red Cross Misamis Oriental – Cagayan de Oro Chapter participated in the Red Cross 143 (RC143) Basic Training and Instructors Training Course (ITC), which took place at the PRC National Headquarters Logistics and Multipurpose Center in Mandaluyong City. This training was attended by representatives from Regions IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, and BARMM. Our Chapter Service Representative (CSR) from Volunteer Services, Safety and Welfare Services, and Disaster Management Services participated, alongside Mr. Nelson GS Sia, a member of our Board of Directors (BOD) for Disaster Management Services.

This training serves as a vital capacity-building initiative aimed at enhancing preparedness and resilience within communities. Its objectives include equipping chapter personnel and selected volunteer leaders with the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to implement, manage, and sustain the Red Cross 143 Program and its associated training initiatives. Furthermore, the training underscored the significant role of Red Cross 143 volunteers as frontline community responders for the Philippine Red Cross. These volunteers are empowered to promote preparedness, enhance resilience, and foster the development of safer, disaster-ready communities.

Collectively, let us enhance volunteerism in our service to humanity.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞

The Philippine Red Cross Misamis Oriental – Cagayan de Oro Chapter responded to a fire incident that occurred on August 4, 2026, on Burgos Street in Barangay 7, Cagayan de Oro City. The fire escalated to a fourth alarm at 5:31 PM, damaging homes and affecting many families. Our Emergency Response Unit (UNIT) Team promptly arrived at the scene to assist the EMS team and provided help to individuals who sustained minor injuries.

The team was also deployed to evaluate the impact on the community affected by the fire. Two individuals with second-degree burns received wound care dressing from our team. Additionally, our Welfare Service team provided meals to those affected by the incident.

In times of emergency, we strive to embody our mission of delivering unwavering support and care to those in need. We invite those who wish to make a difference to direct their donations to the Barangay Council of Barangay 7, demonstrating the power of community in overcoming challenges together.

We thank our dedicated volunteers who continue to embody the spirit of humanity.

𝐑𝐂 𝟏𝟒𝟑 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭: 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧-𝐔𝐩

In support of National Disaster Resilience Month and in celebration of World Mangrove Day, a coastal clean-up and mangrove planting initiative was successfully conducted as part of the 𝐑𝐂 𝟏𝟒𝟑 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 project. This initiative aims to foster collaboration among various agencies and the local community, with the goal of enhancing awareness of the vital importance of mangroves and our collective responsibility to protect the environment.

We wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, including PLENRO, PDRRMO, PNP Maritime, the Municipality of Gitagum, and the Barangay Councils of Pangayawan and Matangad, for their invaluable assistance in this endeavor. We would also like to recognize the dedication of the volunteers who participated in this significant activity.

This initiative is not a one-time event. We remain committed to ensuring that the area is sufficiently populated with mangroves through ongoing monitoring efforts, facilitated not only by the local chapter but also through the active involvement of the community and our partners.

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐑𝐑𝐌 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧

This month's celebration focuses on the importance of proactive preparedness and collaboration in addressing emergencies, extending from community awareness to schools. In partnership with Kong Hua School, the School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) initiative aims to equip students with essential knowledge and skills to effectively respond to emergencies such as natural disasters and health crises.

Through workshops and engaging activities, the campaign raises awareness about potential risks and encourages students to develop emergency plans and participate in safety drills. By integrating disaster risk reduction into the curriculum, we empower students to contribute to their communities' safety and resilience in times of crisis.

In celebration of the National Disaster Resilience Month 2026, a Community DRR Awareness Campaign was conducted during the Lugait ERU Camp in partnership with BFP Lugait. The primary objective of this campaign was to enhance the awareness of newly trained volunteers by providing them with essential knowledge and tools to effectively communicate vital information to their families and communities. This initiative aims to promote a more informed and engaged public, thereby strengthening overall disaster resilience.
