The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) joins our colleagues covering the Senate in condemning Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s attacks on the Philippine media.

Marcoleta, during a blue ribbon committee hearing, accused members of the media of being “paid hacks” and claimed that journalists failed to question the move of the “new majority” to cancel a hearing on the flood control corruption scandal.

Marcoleta’s tirades are clear attempts to undermine the public’s trust in the media amid the coverage of intensifying rift between two political camps. Journalists ferret out the truth and convey it to the public. This includes asking questions to whoever needs to be held accountable. Our colleagues in the Senate have been doing exactly what they ought to do.

Portraying the media as partisan only means to distract the public from real issues that should be put into light. Allegations of corruption hurled against either side must be investigated fully. Journalism’s loyalty is to the people, not to any partisan group with vested interests.

National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Cagayan de Oro Chapter Vice Chairperson Shiela Mae Butlig, together with other representatives from different chapters, participated in the Training for Peer Supporters organized by the NUJP National Directorate from May 25-28 in Antipolo City, Rizal.

This training aimed to strengthen and expand NUJP’s pool of trained peer supporters who can provide psychological first aid to fellow journalists in need.

Because of this initiative, NUJP Cagayan de Oro now has a trained peer supporter who can conduct psychological first aid to Cagayan de Oro journalists and media workers who may experience trauma after covering a sensitive assignment.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Cagayan de Oro Chapter joins the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) and other media groups in the city in commemorating the 44th Press Freedom Week, with a continuing commitment to defend media freedom and promote the welfare of journalists and media workers.

We laud the leaders of COPC for ensuring a series of activities that will promote camaraderie and enhance the skills of the Cagayan de Oro press.

This commemoration would also be an opportune moment for highlighting our demands: to stop any form of media attacks, to decriminalize libel, and to pass the Freedom of Information bill, as well as the dismissal of the complaints filed against our colleague, Menzie Montes of RMN/iFM Cagayan de Oro.

Rest assured, the NUJP Cagayan de Oro Chapter will always stand as a partner in resisting any forces that attempt to curtail the freedom of the members of the media.

We urge our colleagues, especially those in the field, to report any form of press freedom violations to our organization. Through these actions, we are able to reveal the present press freedom situation in Cagayan de Oro.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines calls for justice for the killing of radio broadcaster Nestor Micator.

According to police reports, Micator was shot dead by an assailant on the evening of May 21 outside the barangay hall of Barangay Fort Pikit, Cotabato.

Micator is the 11th journalist killed under the Marcos Jr. administration. Even as two of the killings have been initially declared as not work related by the police, the fact remains that none of these murders have been fully resolved. While four suspects behind two of these killings have been arrested, no mastermind has been brought to justice. Micator should not add to the list of these unresolved cases.

The killing of Micator is proof that impunity persists and the Marcos Jr. administration has failed substantially to protect journalists and media workers. The NUJP stands in solidarity with the family, friends and colleagues of Micator in their search for justice.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) strongly condemns the sexual harassment incident involving a Bacolod-based anchor for making an inappropriate r**e joke toward a female reporter who was simply doing her job and reporting the news.

The reporter was merely reporting on a police case and mentioned that a suspect in a child and women abuse case was in jail. In response, the anchor said he also wanted to go to jail and repeatedly asked the female reporter on air if he could r**e her so that he, too, would end up imprisoned.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) salutes our colleagues who stood their ground to deliver accurate and timely information to the public in spite of the confusion and danger that unfolded in the Senate last night.

While the incident raised a lot of questions, what is clear is that journalists and media workers performed their duty to keep the public informed of the situation under difficult and volatile circumstances.

On World Press Freedom Day, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) officially launches a petition calling for the decriminalization of libel and cyberlibel in the Philippines.

Journalists, artists, students, and everyday citizens continue to face libel and cyber libel cases simply for speaking out. In fact, many of the cases against journalists were filed by politicians, often in retaliation for exposing issues of public interest.

This petition calls on Congress to decriminalize libel and uphold the rights to free expression and a free press — values essential to any democracy.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) - Cagayan de Oro Chapter marks the 2026 World Press Freedom Day with intensified calls to defend media freedom.

We acknowledge the slight improvement of the Philippines’ ranking in the 2026 Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). However, the country is still considered a dangerous place for journalists.

RSF noted that out of the five indicators used to evaluate the state of press freedom, the legal aspect has the sharpest decline globally. This determines the degree of journalists’ ability to work without censorship or judicial sanctions, the ability to access information without discrimination, and the presence of impunity.

This decline reflects the continuing detention of Tacloban-based community journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio following her conviction and the filing of cases and complaints against radio broadcasters, including our colleague, Menzie Montes of RMN/iFM Cagayan de Oro.

The NUJP Safety Office documented a total of 242 alleged press freedom cases in the country under the Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administration as of April 2026. Harassment (surveillance and verbal) topped the list while there were 10 journalists and media workers killed, of which two were initially declared as non-work related by the police. The NUJP Cagayan de Oro Chapter joins the voices of other press freedom organizations calling for journalists' protection, decriminalization of libel, and stopping the weaponization of laws and media killings.

We stress that defending press freedom is not only our struggle but also a fight of the Filipino people. We cannot practice journalism without press freedom, which is also important for Filipinos to exercise their fundamental right to know.
