Mark Lemuel Garcia, the newly appointed DOST Northern Mindanao Regional Director, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining and strengthening initiatives that advance the region’s research, development, and innovation ecosystem.

More than 70 researchers from across Northern Mindanao are participating in Day 1 of the Harmonized Full-Blown Proposal Writeshop, where they are receiving mentoring and technical guidance from 11 DOST and partner institutions experts.

This year, 57 concept proposals from Northern Mindanao advanced to the full-blown proposal stage for the DOST Grants-in-Aid Program under PCIEERD, PCHRD, PCAARRD, and NRCP. This is one of the highest numbers of full-blown proposals recorded in the region to date, and reflects the growing quality and competitiveness of NorMin research proposals.

Held from May 12 to 13, at Philtown Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City, the two-day activity brings together the region’s R&D consortia to help researchers enhance their proposals for the DOST Grants-in-Aid Program. The writeshop aims to refine research ideas into well-developed proposals that meet national evaluation standards.

Four key partners: J.L. Food Products, Misamis Oriental I Electric Cooperative (MORESCO-1), LGU Cagayan de Oro City–CLENRO, and the Department of Trade and Industry Region X (DTI-X) pitched their operational and technical challenges during the 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙋𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 held at Hamersons Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

These partners shared real-world issues related to energy, agriculture, and public services, offering researchers the opportunity to propose demand-driven research and development (R&D) solutions. This collaborative effort seeks to bridge the gap between industry needs and academic expertise, fostering innovation and sustainable development in Northern Mindanao.

Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, Chair of the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (NorMinCIEERD), emphasized the importance of reverse pitching in creating a culture of demand-driven research. He highlighted how real-world problems faced by industries, MSMEs, and local governments inspire solutions that drive regional development.

The event concluded with Ms. Glenda Dorcas T. Sacbibit of DOST-PCIEERD, who presented funding opportunities for both R&D and non-R&D initiatives, underscoring the need for sustained collaboration in addressing regional challenges through science, technology, and innovation.

A total of 𝟏𝟗𝟖 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 from 𝟒𝟎 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 across Region 10, with additional attendees from CAR, NIR, Regions IX, and XIII, participated in the 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 held on 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 via 𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐦.

The writeshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of researchers in developing competitive concept proposals for the DOST-GIA Call for Proposals. The activity provided guidance on priority research areas, submission requirements, and proposal writing strategies, preparing participants to undertake impactful projects that address the region’s pressing challenges in health, industry, energy, emerging technology, agriculture, aquaculture, and forestry.

𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐄𝐑𝐃, 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐂𝐨𝐇𝐑𝐃, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐃, the writeshop featured presentations from the DOST sectoral councils and hands-on breakout sessions with S&T Fellows, equipping researchers with practical skills and expert feedback to refine their proposals.
