Despite living in an archipelago, around 50% Filipinos grow up without learning how to swim.
Why is it that many Filipinos can't swim? According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), poverty and limited access make swimming lessons unaffordable, while public schools rarely include them.
Urbanization also separates communities from natural water, and many cities lack safe, affordable facilities. Cultural factors play a role too, as fear of water or lack of skills is often passed down within families.
As a result, swimming is treated as a โluxury,โ not a basic survival skill. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด, making it a major yet often overlooked public health issue.
