As the crescent moon marks the end of Ramadan, our hearts carry a heavy prayer for the families in Gaza, Iran, Sudan, and every corner of the world where the call to prayer is met with the sound of hardship.

To those for whom this Eid brings no feast but a test of unimaginable resilience, we say Eid Mubarak not as a celebration of ease, but as a testament to your unwavering faith and dignity. We ask that the Almighty grants you the Sakina (tranquility) that transcends circumstance, replaces your fear with security, and honors your sacrifices with a dawn of justice and lasting peace.

May this day be a reminder that you are never forgotten by the global Ummah, and may the blessings of this holy day serve as a shield and a source of renewed strength for every soul enduring through the darkness.

مع حلول هلال شوال وانتهاء شهر رمضان الفضيل، تمتلئ قلوبنا بالدعاء للعائلات في غزة وإيران والسودان وفي كل بقعة من بقاع الأرض التي يُرفع فيها الأذان وسط الشدائد والمحن. وإلى الذين يحل عليهم العيد بلا احتفال بل باختبار لصبرهم وصمودهم الأسطوري، نقول لكم "عيد مبارك"؛ لا كاحتفال بالرخاء، بل كشهادة على إيمانكم الراسخ وكرامتكم الشامخة. نسأل الله القدير أن ينزل على قلوبكم السكينة التي تتجاوز كل الظروف، وأن يبدل خوفكم أمناً، ويجزي تضحياتكم فجراً من العدل والسلام المستدام. فليكن هذا اليوم تذكيراً بأن الأمة لن تنساكم أبداً، وعسى أن تكون بركات هذا اليوم العظيم درعاً لكم ومصدراً لتجديد القوة لكل نفس صابرة في وجه الظلام.

May Allah make all our difficulties more bearable and grant us strength during this hard time.

May Allah purify our hearts from anything heavy, heal what hurts, and replace it with peace and noor (light).

This year’s Ramadhan is more meaningful because of the opportunity to have supported the orphans from six different boarding madaris/schools in Lanao del Sur.

WOMEN IN ISLAM: The contribution of Mariam Al-Asturlabi Al-Ijliya

Every Ramadhan period, moon sighting is done across every part of the globe where Muslim population resides. The study of the moon, skies and the universe known as Astrology was taken up enthusiastically by Islamic scholars during the Islamic golden age. The women from the Islamic civilization have played unique roles in contributing to our scientific knowledge.

In the 10th century, a Muslim woman named Maryam al-Ijliya, also known as Mariam al Astrulabi, took the craft of building astrolabes to the next level. An astrolabe is an ancient device used to measure time and the position of the sun and stars.

Mariam is known for her academic brilliance and an exceptionally focused mind that lay the foundation for managing the transportation and communication using astrolabes.

Born in Syria during the 10th century, her proclivity in developing astrolabes was inspired by his father, known as Al- Ijliyy al-Asturlabi, who was apprenticed to an astrolabe maker in Baghdad.

The design of an astrolabe also required Mariam to work with complex mathematical calculations and precision, but she gradually mastered the designs. This impressed Sayf Al Dawla, the founder of the Emirate of Aleppo that encompassed most of northern Syria and parts of western Jazira. He reigned from 944 to 967 AD.

Al Dawla found Mariam’s works very intricate and innovative. As her fame started to grow, he decided to employ her in the court in Aleppo. Besides this, she also helped develop navigation and timekeeping techniques during that time.

Mariam was a muwaqqita, qualified to cast a sundial, which she did during her lifetime. Mariam was the first woman known to have been an instrument maker.

As the Philippines give tribute to the Women’s month this March, Muslim Filipinos and the Bangsamoro should be proud of the works of the first woman to build an Astrolabe that inspired smartphones in the use of navigation, mapping and determining the time of day, the altitude of celestial objects, and to identify stars or planets.

This 2025, we are faced with interesting times and uncertainties. We hope that all these worries and concerns will eventually unfold to favor our Ummah and the essence of peace and prosperity in Allah SWT perfect time.

May the divine blessings of this sacred month bring us love, light, harmony and Barakah to all our endeavors. May we all be filled with hope, kindness and generosity towards those who are in need. May we become good exemplars of tranquility and amity in diversity.

It is during this holy month when the Qur’an was first revealed to Nabi Muhammad SAW. It is a month of gift and privilege allowing us the opportunity to deepen our faith as Muslims. It is a month of sacrifice to discipline ourselves from the temptations of the world. It is a month of reward for us to increase piety and care.

May Allah SWT accept all our good deeds and prayers.
