In his , President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. highlighted his administration's efforts to hold those involved in alleged flood control scandal accountable.

But accountability cannot stop at promises or investigations. What Marcos Jr. missed is how to address the structural roots on why corruption continues to persist.

Corruption is not merely a governance issue. It is a human rights issue. Every peso lost to corruption is a peso taken away from basic services that must be enjoyed by every Filipino. And we must continue to resist the culture of impunity, where those in power are led to believe they can evade accountability.

The French parliament has passed a law banning children under 15 from accessing social media. The implementation of the ban will take effect from September, when under-15s will be blocked from creating social media accounts.

At Amnesty we believe bans alone without any requirements to change the underlying algorithms and addictive features won't make platforms safe for children.

Photo Journalists hold up a mirror to society.

The PNP targeting them simply for doing their work is deplorable. Freedom of the press in the Philippines has been challenged along with escalating attacks, harassment, intimidation, criminalization, and red-tagging.

Amnesty International calls on the Philippine government to cease its relentless efforts to muzzle journalists and media organizations, and to fulfil its obligations under domestic and international law to safeguard and respect the right to freedom of expression and media freedom.

This week, five people were arrested in a raid on two independent bookstores in Hong Kong. Booksellers should never face arrest simply for doing their jobs.

The use of ‘sedition’ offences to target bookstores once again demonstrates how Hong Kong’s national security framework is being weaponized to silence dissenting voices and eradicate spaces for free thought and debate.

Authorities must immediately stop using national security and sedition laws to criminalize the peaceful exercise of human rights, and ensure that everyone in Hong Kong can access, publish and share ideas without fear of arrest.

Extreme heat is killing hundreds of thousands of people across the world, and the climate crisis has a huge part to play. The constant burning of fossil fuels that pollutes our air and is the main driver of global heating is causing these deaths to skyrocket. But it’s not too late for governments and corporations to phase out fossil fuels through a just transition that protects human rights, including the right to a healthy environment.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Amnesty International Philippines PHINMA COC Chapter and AI-Philippines Region 10A Cagayan de Oro mobilized students to back global justice campaigns during the university’s annual opening events last week. It ran a dedicated advocacy booth during the PHINMA COC Welcoming Week from July 5 to 10, gathering signatures to combat pressing human rights violations worldwide.
