Flooding is one of the most common and destructive environmental issues in the Philippines. Urban areas like Metro Manila and low-lying provinces such as Cagayan and Pampanga are especially vulnerable due to poor drainage systems, deforestation, and rapid urbanization. Climate change has also intensified rainfall patterns, making floods more frequent and severe.
Floods affect Filipinos in many ways. Such as loss of life, injuries, displacement of millions, destruction of homes and infrastructure (roads, bridges, buildings), and severe economic damage to agriculture, businesses, and trade.
But we are not powerless. We can take action together. By planting trees and restoring, it helps absorb excess water and protect coastlines. Proper waste disposal prevents clogged canals and drainage systems. Supporting climate-resilient infrastructure and transparent government projects ensures long-term protection. Educating youth and communities about disaster preparedness builds resilience. And most importantly, we must advocate for environmental policies that prioritize people and nature.
