Mindanao State Universityโ€“Zamboanga Sibugay (formerly MSU-Buug), through the College of Forestry and Environmental Studies (CFES) and organized by the KATKAT Mountaineering Club, successfully conducted its 4rth Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) and Emergency First Aid Training on March 21, 2026, at Barangay Labrador and Muyo, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, with 37 CFES students participating as trainees.

The BMC was designed to prepare CFES students for mountaineering activities by equipping them with essential skills in environmental ethics, trip planning, navigation, campsite management, survival skills, and proper use of equipment. The activity also included hands-on exercises such as hiking, river traverse training, and tent pitching. The Emergency First Aid Training, facilitated by BFP personnel, enhanced participantsโ€™ readiness in responding to emergencies.

The conduct of the BMC is highly relevant to the academic programs of BS Environmental Science and BS Forestry. For Environmental Science students, mountaineering provides practical exposure to ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental assessment in upland and protected areas. For Forestry students, it enhances field competencies such as forest navigation, resource inventory, and site evaluation. Ultimately, the activity bridges classroom learning with field-based application, fostering environmental stewardship and resilience among future professionals.

The activity contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
โ€ข SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) โ€“ through first aid and safety training;
โ€ข SDG 4 (Quality Education) โ€“ by providing experiential and skills-based learning;
โ€ข SDG 13 (Climate Action) โ€“ by promoting awareness of environmental protection;
โ€ข SDG 15 (Life on Land) โ€“ through appreciation and conservation of forest ecosystems;
โ€ข SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) โ€“ through collaboration with agencies such as the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Through this initiative, MSU-Zamboanga Sibugay continues to strengthen its commitment to producing competent, field-ready graduates while promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

The North Peak of Mt. Malindang is the second-highest peak in Misamis Occidental's Malindang Range, standing at approximately 2,183 meters above sea level. It is located within the Mount Malindang Range Natural Park and is well-known for its diverse wildlife and beautiful mossy forests. The trail to the peak is moderately difficult, with steep sections and lush, undisturbed forest. Sebucal is the last barrio of Oroquieta City. Barangay Sebucal is located in a beautiful valley in the Malindang Range. The Layawan River, a clear and large body of water that meanders from these mountains to Oroquieta City and falls into the sea, has its source here.

The Katkat Mountaineering Club members completed the Mt. Malindang North Peak-Brgy Sebucal Trail on April 17-20. Approximately 45 people completed the North Peak, while others trekked the Sebucal Trail under the leadership of KATKAT President Khaiel Mesias. It's one of the most memorable experiences; pushing your body and mind through challenging terrain, unpredictable weather, and moments of doubt provides a tremendous sense of success. It's about overcoming inner difficulties, appreciating nature's raw beauty, and rediscovering your fortitude, whether you're standing at the summit or at the trailhead.

To our esteemed adviser, Dr. Bryan L. Bitantos, together with our former KATKAT President Ms. Brithney Shane Oquete, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for his unwavering support, valuable guidance, and committed dedication to the KATKAT MOUNTAINEERING CLUB. Their dedication, support, and prudent guidance have been crucial in determining our organization's course and level of success. Their guidance and the beneficial influence they have had on our path are greatly appreciated.

At an elevation of 2,928 meters (9,606 feet) above sea level, Mount Pulag is considered the third-highest mountain in the Philippines. Its peak is located in the Municipality of Kabayan, Benguet Province. Mount Pulag ranks as the third most prominent summit in the country, following Mt. Apo and Mt. Dulang-dulang. The peak marks the boundary between the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Vizcaya. It is renowned for its stunning "sea of clouds" and breathtaking sunrise views of the Milky Way Galaxy.

The members of the Katkat Mountaineering Club are inspired by our esteemed KATKAT Adviser, Dr. Bryan L. Bitantos, whose perseverance and commitment to mountaineering were evident during his successful climb of Mt. Pulag on March 15โ€“16. We hold you in the highest regard, Dr. Bitantos. The members of KATKAT MC are incredibly proud of you. Congratulations, and may you continue to inspire fellow mountaineers in the appreciation, protection, and conservation of our mountains for present and future generations.
