Mindanao State UniversityโZamboanga Sibugay (formerly MSU-Buug), through the College of Forestry and Environmental Studies (CFES) and organized by the KATKAT Mountaineering Club, successfully conducted its 4rth Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) and Emergency First Aid Training on March 21, 2026, at Barangay Labrador and Muyo, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, with 37 CFES students participating as trainees.
The BMC was designed to prepare CFES students for mountaineering activities by equipping them with essential skills in environmental ethics, trip planning, navigation, campsite management, survival skills, and proper use of equipment. The activity also included hands-on exercises such as hiking, river traverse training, and tent pitching. The Emergency First Aid Training, facilitated by BFP personnel, enhanced participantsโ readiness in responding to emergencies.
The conduct of the BMC is highly relevant to the academic programs of BS Environmental Science and BS Forestry. For Environmental Science students, mountaineering provides practical exposure to ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental assessment in upland and protected areas. For Forestry students, it enhances field competencies such as forest navigation, resource inventory, and site evaluation. Ultimately, the activity bridges classroom learning with field-based application, fostering environmental stewardship and resilience among future professionals.
The activity contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
โข SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) โ through first aid and safety training;
โข SDG 4 (Quality Education) โ by providing experiential and skills-based learning;
โข SDG 13 (Climate Action) โ by promoting awareness of environmental protection;
โข SDG 15 (Life on Land) โ through appreciation and conservation of forest ecosystems;
โข SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) โ through collaboration with agencies such as the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Through this initiative, MSU-Zamboanga Sibugay continues to strengthen its commitment to producing competent, field-ready graduates while promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
