🏛️ World Architecture Day 2026: “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”

Mark your calendars for Monday, 5 October 2026.

The UIA is proud to announce this year’s theme, aligned with UN World Habitat Day’s which focuses on “Adequate Housing for All”.

Millions of people worldwide still lack access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing — with real consequences for health, dignity, and inclusion. This World Architecture Day, we call on architects everywhere to go beyond design and engage in the conversations shaping housing policy, affordability, and equitable access to the built environment.

“No other art form is as closely interwoven with society as architecture.”

~Architect Gabriel Formoso

Architect Gabriel Formoso has been named the 7th National Artist for Architecture through Proclamation No. 1414, becoming the first architect in seven years to receive this distinction—one of the highest honors the Philippines bestows upon its artists. His recognition was conferred posthumously.

Formoso’s work helped shape the Philippine postwar architectural landscape, with notable works including:

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Complex (1970)
Asian Institute of Management (1970)
Manila Peninsula Hotel (1974)
Bank of America-Lepanto Building (1978)
Pacific Star Building (1989)

His buildings are more than structures. They are part of the country’s institutional, commercial, and cultural memory.

A fitting recognition for an architect whose work reflects his own belief that architecture is deeply interwoven with society.

For decades, the drawings showing a building's layout and look could be signed by either an architect or a civil engineer. In 2004 the public works department rewrote the rules under the National Building Code and assigned those drawings to architects alone. The civil engineers' organization sued to void the provision; the architects intervened to defend it. The case raised a question that runs through every regulated profession: can a law written for architects limit what civil engineers may sign?

DPWH v. PICE shows how the boundaries between licensed professions are drawn by statute, and what happens when two laws speak to the same act. It reaches everyone who builds. Every building permit in the country runs through the provision this case tested. Whose signature the city accepts on your house plans is decided here.

FROM INK TO DINK REAL QUICK. The United Architects of the Philippines - Butuan Chapter, alongside UAPSA SJIT, Architecture Student Association - SJIT, and the United Architects of the Philippines Graduate Auxiliary - Caraga (UAPGA Caraga), successfully gathered for an afternoon of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and active recreation.

Architects, graduates, and students traded their drafting pens and blueprints for pickleball paddles at the Evian Pickleball Grounds in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.

This inter-chapter and multi-generational sports activity served as a refreshing break from the drawing board, strengthening professional bonds and personal connections within the architectural community of the region.
