The Mindanao Institute of Journalism and MindaNews, in partnership with Father Saturnino Urios University, opened the first leg of the Unheard Voices of Climate Action exhibit on February 11 through a forum that gathered participants from various sectors, ranging from students and government agencies to NGOs and indigenous peoples’ organizations. The forum highlighted local climate realities and emphasized cross-sector responses to environmental challenges.

Organizers followed the forum with a photo exhibit featuring stills from the documentaries, presenting stories from both lowland and highland communities. The collection traced climate experiences across landscapes, from the coastal areas of Taganak Island, Tawi Tawi, and Siargao Island, to the upland communities of Upi, Maguindanao and Marilog, Davao City, offering a visual account of how climate action unfolds in different terrains and contexts.

This event was also made possible with support from the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines through Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

𝗙𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝟭𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲—Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) officially opened the Mindanews Forum Exhibit: Unheard Voices of Climate Action at the College Building (CB) Main Lobby this afternoon.

Prior to the opening, a program was held at Audio Visual Room (AVR) 1, beginning with a prayer and the national anthem through an Audio Visual Presentation (AVP). This was followed by an opening remarks of Dr. Arlyn M. Floreta, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, mentioning the Laudatu Si and the Catholic documents of Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) challenging us to care and take action in our environment. MinJourn speaker Hazel Jane Ardepolia then presented the exhibit’s rationale and objectives, highlighting journalism’s role in documenting vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

Two short films featured stories from the islands and highlands. The island segment showcased Taganak’s smooth-coated otters, the Turtle Islands, conservation efforts, and Siargao’s mangroves, including the SEA Movement and flood mitigation initiatives. The first conversation followed, featuring Jessan Vie Cordova from the Arts and Sciences Program (ASP), Biology and Chemistry Area, Creative Director Charlie Bebs Gohetia, and Lady Carmel Litang of the SEA Movement.

The highlands film highlighted drought experiences in Upi-Gumitan and the Teduray’s practices in preserving Kerut, their survival food; and Lalapung’s seed storage practices, rice planting, and native “humay” varieties. The second conversation featured Bea Samponay Ana Lasco from the Anticala Tribal Council of Elders & Leaders Association Inc. (ATRICELAI) and Mr. Gohetia. An open forum was then held, allowing the audience to engage in a question-and-answer portion with the speakers. In her closing remarks, Ms. Rubyrose Lora from MindaJourn, expressed her gratitude for solidarity and the collective effort toward building a stronger community.

To conclude, the exhibit officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the College Building (CB) Lobby and is now open to the Urian community and guests until February 13, 2026 (Friday).
