Reminiscing β‚±iso Ko, Transistor Mo: A Lifeline of Learning in the Time of Crisis

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world stood still and classrooms fell silent, a small but determined movement found its voice over the airwaves.

It was 2020. In the remote barangays of the provinces of Northern and Eastern Samar, the pandemic had shut down traditional education, leaving thousands of students without access to learning. Internet connectivity was scarce, and online classes were not a feasible option for many.

In response to this crisis, the Humanitarian Order of Sierra FalconΓ¨s, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Divisions of Northern and Eastern Samar, launched an ambitious project: β€œPiso Ko, Transistor Mo.”

The concept was simple, yet profoundβ€”a community-driven initiative where every peso could help provide a transistor radio to a child in need. But this was only part of the vision. Through the tireless efforts of volunteers, local educators, and government support, we established 9 fully operational FM radio stations across Northern and Eastern Samar. These stations became the heartbeat of the project, broadcasting lessons, educational programs, and a message of hope.

πŸŽ™οΈ Radio-Based Instruction (RBI) became the bridge between educators and learners. Teachers from DepEd adapted learning modules into radio scripts, and our FM stations carried those lessons to far-flung barangays, sitios, and islands places where physical presence and digital access were impossible.

πŸ’‘ What started as a humanitarian response grew into an educational revolution. We weren’t just delivering content; we were preserving dreams, nurturing resilience, and reinforcing the right to learn, no matter the circumstances.

Today, as we look back, we celebrate not only the success of β€œPiso Mo, Transistor Ko” but the spirit behind it. It was about people coming together, believing that education must continue, and that even in the darkest moments, we can find creative, compassionate solutions.

To all who donated a peso, volunteered time, voiced lessons, or helped build these stations brick by brickβ€”thank you. To our partners at DepEd Northern Samar and DepEd Eastern Samar, your dedication made it all possible. The echoes of your commitment still resonate across the airwaves and in the lives you’ve touched.

Let this be a reminder: Innovation doesn’t always come from the top; sometimes, it starts with a transistor and a community that cares.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world stood still and classrooms fell silent, a small but determined movement found its voice over the airwaves. It was 2020.

20for24 Challenge: School Kits Distribution at Canyupay Elementary School

On December 14, 2024, the Sierra Falcones Eastern Samar Chapter brought smiles and excitement to the pupils of Canyupay Elementary School in Borongan, Eastern Samar, through the successful distribution of school kits under the 20for24 Challenge. This initiative provided 24 delighted students with school bags and essential supplies, making a significant impact on their educational journey. For many of these pupils, acquiring such items is a challenge, and the joy on their faces as they received their kits was a testament to the importance of this effort.

The activity began with a warm welcome from Rosie D. Guimba, SPTA President, who acknowledged the importance of community-driven initiatives like the 20for24 Challenge. Rhea Palma Ortego, a Sierra Falcones volunteer from the Eastern Samar Chapter, shared the mission and vision of Sierra Falcones and provided an inspiring overview of the 20for24 Challenge, highlighting how collective action and small contributions can create meaningful change. Ma’am Joyce Jawili Sabate, in her heartfelt acceptance message, expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the school. It is emphasized how these school kits would significantly benefit students, many of whom depend on their teachers for basic supplies, and stressed the value of such support in nurturing young learners.

The Sierra Falcones are profoundly thankful to Ma’am Jerika Mapaquit for her tireless efforts in organizing the event and carefully sourcing the school supplies, ensuring each kit was thoughtfully prepared. We also extend our appreciation to Pitman Outdoors PH for crafting the durable school bags that will accompany the pupils on their educational journey. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the faculty and staff of Canyupay Elementary School for their warm and gracious welcome. Your hospitality and support made the event even more meaningful, creating a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved. A heartfelt thanks goes to the HUMANITARIAN ORDER OF SIERRA FALCONÈS, INC., Sierra FalconΓ¨s all the dedicated volunteers, and friends who embraced the 20for24 Challenge. Your commitment to saving β‚±20 daily for 20 days not only made this activity possible but also demonstrated the power of unity and compassion.

In recognition of these efforts, Canyupay Elementary School presented the Sierra Falcones Eastern Samar Chapter with a Certificate of Appreciation. This gesture of gratitude inspires the organization to continue reaching out to children in remote communities, providing them with the tools they need to succeed and dream big.

Through initiatives like the 20for24 Challenge, Sierra Falcones reaffirms its commitment to its mission: "Serving Filipino Children in the Remote Communities."
