Cancer is a problematic disease known worldwide. According to a recent research by the Cancer Coalition of the Philippines (CCP), the country has an average of 11 people being diagnosed with various cases of cancer daily. An alarming numberโas it affects many of our families and until now, an efficient cure is yet to be discovered. In status quo, the disease is only limited to a handful of treatments. Chemotherapy is one type of treatment that is well known and it uses chemical substances such as cytotoxic and other drugs. The treatment regimen is very costly, causing a lot of patientsโ families to be in financial debt, and despite this, there are thin chances of retaining a normal lifestyle after treatment.
With that being said, health-deteriorating side effects are acquired by most patients after being treated with chemotherapy. One evident side effect is hair loss. It occurs because the treatment targets all rapidly dividing cellsโcancer cells, and even healthy cells. This means that hair follicles, some of the fastest-growing cells in the body, are more often than not critically affected by the treatment.
The loss of hair and its conspicuousness contributes to the emotional thinking of certain patients, because it reminds them of their current state of illness, and it worries them on how theyโll be perceived by other members of society. Some patients outgrow this sort of mentality, but undeniably, there are still some who donโt.
We, the members of the Manila Downtown YMCA Youth Club, acknowledge this phenomena in our developing world and have initiated this project in response to such. Strand Up for Cancer is a project that aims to promote Cancer Awareness, and to provide wigs to cancer patients as an attempt to spread optimism and positivity, a sense of belongingness in a community. A message saying that no matter what, there will always be someone who cares.
