The Department of Environmental Science at Pangasinan State University - Binmaley Campus conducted its freshman orientation program for the 1st year Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science students last Monday, August 24, 2026. The event formally welcomed the incoming class and introduced them to the academic culture, values, and expectations of the university.

The orientation was led by Ma’am Lorena F. Aquino, Ph.D., Chairperson of the Environmental Science Department. Dr. Aquino delivered an inspiring message that emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility, academic discipline, and professional excellence. She also introduced the different instructors and professors of the BS Environmental Science program, giving the students a warm welcome and a clear sense of the mentors who will guide their academic journey.

This significant event marked the beginning of the students’ collegiate experience, fostering a strong sense of belonging and commitment to their chosen field. It also reflected the department’s dedication to preparing competent graduates who will contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and environmental protection.

KATMON’S PROMISING EDGE🌿

Cancer cells can sometimes learn to resist chemotherapy, making drugs that once worked much less effective. In a UP Diliman study, however, a fraction taken from Katmon leaves stayed active even against colorectal cancer cells with a high level of drug resistance.

Researchers studied Dillenia philippinensis, or Katmon, a plant endemic to the Philippines. Among the leaf fractions they tested, one called DP1 showed the strongest activity against four breast and colorectal cancer cell lines.

The most interesting result came from HCT-15/Dox, a colorectal cancer cell line made highly resistant to the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin.

Doxorubicin became about 100 times less potent against these resistant cells compared with the original HCT-15 cells. DP1, on the other hand, became only about 2.5 times less potent. In other words, the Katmon fraction kept much more of its activity even as the cancer cells became harder to kill.

The researchers also found that DP1 could interfere with P-glycoprotein, one of the proteins cancer cells can use to pump drugs back out before they have enough time to work. At higher concentrations, DP1 reduced this pumping activity in the highly resistant cells.

The findings are promising, but they are still early. The experiments were done on cultured cells in the laboratory, not on patients, and researchers tested a specially prepared fraction from Katmon leaves rather than the leaves themselves.

Further studies are needed to identify which compounds are responsible and whether they can produce the same effects safely in animals and eventually in humans.

For now, Katmon gives researchers another interesting lead in the search for ways to understand and potentially overcome multidrug resistance in cancer.

The study was conducted by researchers from the UP Diliman Institute of Biology and published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention.

Nilinang ang mga kasanayan at karunungan ng mga mag-aaral na magsisipagtapos ngayong taon sa loob ng apat na taong pananatili sa Pangasinan State University.
Sinubok sila ng iba't ibang pagkakataon na siyang nagpatatag, at nagpahusay sakanila inihanda para ipamalas ang mga aral mula sa klase tungo sa mga propesyong panglilingkuran.
Bunga ng taimtim na panalangin, pagpupursige, at pagpapatuloy ang pagkamit nila ng kanilang diploma at pagtungtong sa entablado.

Look || “PROJECT TULIP 2026: Citizen Science and Environmental Stewardship in Lingayen, Pangasinan” 🌊🍃

From June 22-24, the wetlands of Lingayen, Pangasinan became a living classroom. Students, faculty, and local partners joined hands in the Wetlands BioBlitz, exploring, documenting, and celebrating the ecosystems that sustain us.

Guided by experts from ERDB, participants learned how to test water quality, identify aquatic plants and birds, and use GIS tools to map wetland resources. More than science, it was a chance to connect—linking local knowledge with global research through the TULIP Project and the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project.

This collaboration, led by Innoceana, SCPW, UPLB, and KNA, showed that conservation is strongest when communities take part. Every observation, every map point, every shared story adds to the bigger picture: protecting wetlands for future generations. 🌍💚

Together, we are building a culture of citizen science and environmental stewardship—because understanding wetlands begins with exploring them.
