𝐃𝐈𝐆 𝐃𝐄𝐄𝐏: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞
Indigenous groups have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, developing a strong cultural and religious attachment to their natural environment. However, mounting pains caused by illegal mining activities from enterprises resulted in these lands being exploited and mined without consent and without protection. As a result, families have been relocated, and indigenous cultures, customs, and spiritual connections to these locations are in jeopardy.
Mining is critical to economic prosperity, but it comes at a heavy cost, as the balance between growth and recognizing Indigenous peoples' rights is disrupted. The legal protection that can protect these communities and territories has also been tested by ongoing struggles for justice and rights to their ancestral lands.
In this seminar and discussion, we will hear from distinguished speakers who have dedicated much of their work and studies to uncover and empower the voices of Indigenous communities in the Philippines.
More than a simple discussion–this is a call to action. Together, we can support our local IPs and help work for a future where Indigenous rights and environmental justice no longer go unnoticed.
