39th ANNIVERSARY OF EDSA PEOPLE POWER

On February 25, 2025, we remember the 39th anniversary of the important four days of the peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution, which led to the fall of the harsh Marcos regime in 1986. This uprising was mainly a spontaneous gathering of many people—friends, family, and coworkers—who came together after Jaime Cardinal Sin called them over the radio. Their bravery in facing guns and tanks came from years of learning and engaging in their schools and communities, growing a strong belief in human dignity and the common good. Many saw EDSA as a response to their faith, answering a call for justice and service. As the late Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ, said, it was about personal stories of people responding to what God and their country needed from them. Almost 40 years later, while we celebrate EDSA as a key moment for democracy, we also recognize that our struggles continue with weak institutions and ongoing poverty and injustice. This reality can lead people to support self-serving leaders. We will resist efforts to change our history and commit to building true democracy and accountability for a better future for the Philippines.
